Another month has rolled around, all too fast. As this is being written the Big Green eleven has just cleared its highest hurdle, blanking Yale, 10 to 0. Hopefully, by the time this reaches you we will have recorded one of the best seasons in history.
In addition to his teaching career. Dr.Bill David, chairman of the Department of Political Science at Western Maryland College, has remained active in the U. S. Air Force Reserve, and in September he was promoted to colonel. In connection with his reserve duty, he has seen service in Baltimore, at the Pentagon, and now at Andrews Air Force Base. His work is in the field of personnel, dealing with civilian planning. In conjunction with another professor, he recently has developed a self-help seminar for supervisors which is being conducted experimentally in Dayton, Ohio. This assignment is with the employee and career development division of the Director of Personnel for Air Force Systems Command.
Since 1954 Ken Nevius has been with the Covenant Insurance Company, in Hartford, most recently as manager of Standards and Methods. It has now been announced that Ken was elected assistant secretary of that organization early this fall.
After many years on the West Coast, Bunny and Dana Chase have returned to New England—Longmeadow, Mass., to be exact. Dana is now development engineer with the Milton Bradley Company in East Longmeadow. After his many years in aeronautics, Dana should produce some high flying games for his new employer. Bunny has been quite ill since returning East. It is hoped that she is well on the road to full recovery by this time.
In Tulsa, Oklahoma, Ed Patterson has moved up from president to chairman of the board and chief executive officer of Patterson Steel Company, the fifty-year-old steel fabricating business founded by his family. The company merged with Anixter Bros., Inc. of Skokie, Ill. in 1969, and Ed serves on their board and is also board chairman of another Anixter Company in the Tulsa area, Danuser Machine Works. He and Frances have two children, Lindsay Anne, 19, and Laurence, 16. Ed is active in a number of Tulsa organizations, including the Chamber of Commerce, Boys' Home, and various banking and business concerns.
Carolyn and Lew Johnstone joined the grandparents club on August 31 when their son Knox and his wife presented them with a grandson in Berlin, N. H., where Knox is teaching school. On their way up to visit the new arrival in September, Carolyn and Lew stopped off for a short visit with Shirleyand Frank Simpson at Dexter's Lodge in Sunapee, which the Simpsons have operated since last spring. Both agree it is a beautiful spot. Lew has been contributing his mite (or might) to the improvement of the ecology of the country. Five years ago he bought a 150-acre farm on the Ohio River and has become obsessed with the idea of turning it into a garden spot. He now has a picnic area with tables and shelter, a boat dock and ski boat, sandy beach, four horses, three ponies, and a tractor to keep it all functioning. Sounds like a great spot for a reunion some year!
It is a sad adjunct of the Secretary's duties to report periodically on the death of a classmate. It is sadder yet, I find, to report the loss of a friend's and a classmate's loved one. On October 9, after a long and courageous fight against a lingering illness, Kathy Friedlich passed away. I know that the heartfelt sympathy of every member of 1941 goes out to Bruce and their sons, Bill, Donald, and Jimmy.
More next month—if you write!
