We learned via Bobby Alpert and Bob Howe of the passing of Ed Oppenheim on September 24, of pneumonia, after a long illness. Oppy's death leaves the class with a total roll call of 408, including 84 non-grads.

Bill Tomkins was awarded the 1939 Man of the Year plaque, and deservedly so, at the picnic ceremony. We joined Herb and Jinny Mattlage at the picnic. Herb has had' some tough luck with hip replacements, but it was good to see Jinny hale and hearty and full of bounce once again.

On the other hand, we missed four regulars: Hugie McLaren, who was home in Long Island recovering from a stroke; Ralph Holben, who was in the intensive care of the new Mary Hitchcock; Jack Cumming who had a hip replacement backfire Shortly before the weekend; and Jack Coulson detained by reasons other than health, despite well-laid plans to attend.

Some classmates took a tour of the new medical facility, which is a dandy, and we understand it has been recognized as the prototype of hospital high tech. It is interesting to note that Freddie Upton had a great deal to do with the planning process as a director of the institution.

While on the subject of medicine, according to Dartmouth Medicine, Wally Davis was recently honored with a lectureship named in his honor at Jefferson Medical College.

A green card from Pete Salom apologizes for a lengthy gap in his correspondence but reports that he and wife Colleen are fine. They have two sons and three grandchildren, and they spend six months in Swarthmore, Penn., and six months at the Newjersey shore, where they miss their ex-neighbor, the late DaveWard.

From Bruce Learned comes the following: "Wife Cusi I, and all ten children (and coming-up-nine grandchildren) are all splendid. If we can sell our house in Bealeton, Va., which has. so far been on the market for two months without so much as a phone call, we'll probably move to Mexico. Why? Because it's cheaper living there, we have quite a few friends there, and we speak the language. We were also thinking of Austria, but Cusi unfortunately speaks no German."

Perhaps you are considering Christmas gifts for the upcoming celebration. If so, both Peter Cardozo and I would appreciate a lovely gift of communication from you guys, either via green card or perhaps something more ambitious. In the meantime may you have a Merry and Mirthful Christmas holiday.
