As we reach the end of June and the 1974 Alumni Fund Drive comes to a close, the Class Officers, and particularly Jack Barclay, urge each member of the Class to complete his contribution to the College. If you have already done so, and hundreds have, your gift is sorely needed and greatly appreciated. End of commercial, but we're very serious.
As summer comes on many people will be planning their vacations. If any of you are planning a sail on Lake Erie, head down to the western end toward Toledo and give a holler to John McWilliam. John can solve a couple of your problems. First, as general manager and chief executive officer of the Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority he can probably find a good spot to tie up your vessel. John has just been made a member of the board of directors of the Toledo Trust Company so I suppose he could put in a good word for you with a loan officer at the bank so you could get enough money to buy gas to get your boat home again. That is, if you can find gas. Congratulations, John.
Word from the Navy is that Steve Lazarus, who has held the rank of captain since May, 1972, retired this winter after 20 years of active naval service. He was serving on duty in the Maritime Administration of the Department of Commerce. Steve remains in his present job as Deputy Assistant Secretary of Commerce and Director of the Bureau of East-West Trade. The Lazarus retirement address is 5639 Eastbourne Drive, Springfield, Va. 22151.
Sandy Wiper, who teaches biology at Newton (Mass.) North High School, has been elected the director of Region I of the National Association of Biology Teachers. He serves on the board of directors and his new responsibilities will be for membership and the Association's program in the six New England States. Sandy's last picture spot in this column was two years ago when the Association named him the outstanding biology teacher in his home state.
The other day we were posting some address changes sent by the College and noticed some coincidences that might be of interest. Our class of some 700 members has 80 doctors of various types, or about 11 percent. There are three Johnsons in the Class, and all of them are doctors. Charles Johnson is in practice in Sioux City, Iowa; George Johnson resides and practices in Bridgeport, Conn.; and Ken Johnson does likewise from Annandale, Va. We also have a similar situation with David Baum and Jules Baum. Dave teaches medicine at the University of Washington in Seattle while Jules is also in the educational side of medicine in the Boston area.
Since we have slipped into the trivia bit, possibly it would be worthwhile to know that our class still lives predominately in the East and Midwest. Over the past 20 years California. Arizona, and Florida have been the fastest-growing states in the country, but our class seems not to have caught that bug - with the exception of California. Fifty-two members of the class live now in California, but only four live in Arizona and six in Florida. Seventy-nine percent of the Class lives east of the Mississippi River and of the five states with the most people, four of them are, as you might expect. New York with 16%, Massachusetts with 13%, New Jersey and Connecticut tied with 9% of the class. California is the fifth largest in class population. George Moerlein of Anchorage, Alaska, BillConway of New Orleans. George Rambour of Columbus, Neb., John Yates of Roswell, N.M., Ed Fitzgerald of Middletown, R.I., Dave Griggs of Pickens, S.C., and Andy Jackson of Laramie, Wyo., all share the same distinction. They are the only members of the Class living in their states.
If you are traveling around the country this summer don't plan to visit any classmates in Idaho, Mississippi, Nevada, South Dakota, Utah or West Virginia. Nobody lives there. On the other hand, 12 members of the Class live in Europe so you might look into that. Had enough?
This is our last report before the summer season and we'd like to wish everyone a pleasant and healthy summer. If at all possible, plan to join your classmates and the various fall get-togethers now being organized by Bill Breed, social chairman. We'll definitely have something going at the Harvard game in Hanover as well as most other games through the season. In the meantime, keep us posted on your activities.
