With the mega-merger of Chemical Banking Corp. and Manufacturers Hanover Corp. comes the news that Bill Pierce has been named chief risk-policy officer for the combined banking giant. Bill had been chief credit officer for Chemical. Bill, Liz, and their two sons Will and Kemper reside in Brooklyn Heights, N.Y., but spend as much time as possible at their Lake Morey, Vt., home.

Mary, Vic, and I met with Chuck Preuss and his wife, Barb, briefly in the Norwich (Vt.) Inn during the Holy Cross weekend. They were visiting their son Charles, who is a junior at the Big Green, and were joined by their daughter Jennifer, a sophomore at Connecticut College. Left at home in California was 14-year-old son Philip. Chuck is a lawyer with the San Francisco firm of Bronson Bronson & McKinnon and specializes in medical liability cases... get him to tell you about the case of the disappearing breast implant.

Having been recently glued to the Clarence Thomas proceedings, I suddenly realized that something was missing, namely our noted Washington barrister Tom Green. He was, as you know, a prominent defense attorney during Watergate and Irangate Somehow, he missed out on the Thomas/Hillgate... and he's probably glad of it.

Gordy Williamson and his wife Virginia recently saw Bill Tragakis in Boston where Bill runs an expanding plumbing supply business. "Bill regaled us with stories about SteveLasch. In particular, he told of Steve being laid off by Rheem Company (water heaters) after it exported manufacturing operations to Mexico, and how, shortly thereafter, Bill was being wined and dined by Rheem at a black tie affair in Chicago. Bill dragged Steve to the event and used one of his tickets to obtain Steve's admission. A casually-clad Lasch got to explain to Rheem executives, amid champagne and caviar, just what the company's priorities ought to be." Ah, plumbing justice at the hands of two '62s.
