The news of the class this spring includes tires, nuclear energy, an Ark of the Covenant, television productions, and financial accounting . . . but not necessarily in that order.
The Boston Globe recently reported on John Stevens' balancing act. As president of Eastern Utilities Associates, John is responsible for supplying electricity to some 30,000 customers in Massachusetts and Rhode Island while dealing with the enormous costs of the nuclear facility at Seabrook, N.H. John and his wife Nancy live in Acton, Mass.
Also in the juggling business is Bill Pierce, currently the chief credit officer for Chemical Banking Corporation of New York. Bill was recently appointed by the board of trustees of the Financial Accounting Foundation to a oneyear term as a member of the Financial Accounting Standards Advisory Council. The Council, composed of 33 high-level individuals representing preparers, auditors and users of financial statements, advises the Financial Accounting Standards Board on major policy questions and projects.
The Annenberg Research Institute named Eric Meyers as its new director. The Philadelphia-based institute is a secular institution devoted to studies of Judaic and Near-Eastern culture and history. Eric had been a professor of biblical archaeology at Duke University. He and his wife Carol, a professor of religion at Duke, have recently been on sabbatical at Princeton where they are collaborating on a second commentary on late biblical prophecy. Back in 1981 Eric led a team that unearthed the oldest know Ark of the Covenant (third century) in northern Israel. Moving obliquely from northern Israel to Oklahoma City, Bob Vetrone works in his vineyard as a human resources manager for Bridgestone/Firestone's 1700-mn tire plant. Bob's wife Barbara is in the food business in South Carolina and spends half her time commuting back and forth.
Television productions, you ask? HowardWeinberg wrote, directed, and produced a Bill Moyers special for Public Broadcasting on "Sports for Sale." The 90-minute special, followed by a discussion and call-in, is aimed at the commercial aspects of sports in the U.S. and was scheduled to air on March 19. Howard, who has been associated with Moyers on a number of productions, works out of New York City.
