It was both saddening and uplifting to learn from her family that Laura Carter had passed on peacefully on October 19—as always, "a dear and gallant lady." In 1985, a year after Bill's passing, Laura joined daughter Kit and Kit's husband, Doug, in Phoenix, Ariz., where, despite partial impairment by a stroke, "she remained alert, happy, and in good health until just recently." Friends who wish to make memorial gifts may send them to The First Church of Christ, Scientist, Hanover, NH 03755, or The First Church of Christ, Scientist, 10045 Clair Drive, Sun City, AZ 85351.

More sad news came from Edith Bowen (Mrs. David '21), reporting that ElsaCrathern, widow of Charlie, passed away in a nursing home in Antelope, Calif., probably in August. "Although she was blind, she somehow had managed to type a few cheery letters to me... She would have been 90 or 91."

From Alumni Records came news of LarryLovejoy's death in September. An obituary appears in this issue.

More cheerfully, I quote from an October message from Alice Ungar: "If you think about it, Leo was not in a hurry to marry, but last month we celebrated our 55 th .. . that was a happy note, yes? He says it's tough to be ninety. I say you've got to be tough to be ninety, right?"

May this early-arriving winter be kind to us survivors! Love,
