Although these notes are being written in mid-September, it's time to wish us all a good Thanksgiving, with as many loved ones as possible around the festive board. Perhaps here in the North Country the gray of November will have been brightened by a few days of Indian summer to compensate for the untimely chill of late August. On the other hand, jingle-bells weather may have arrived at Halloween.
How heartwarming to receive the following from Benjamin H. Watts 'B4: "I am writing for my grandfather, Richard P.Watts '2O, who is too modest to write himself. On August 9 'Dick' ('Granddad' to me) celebrated his 90th birthday at a party given by his children and grandchildren. The party was attended by nearly 40 friends and relatives, including Jerry Cutler '21. The party kicked off at Dick's house in Adrian, Mich., with cocktails and appetizers. Later, dinner was served at the Lenawee Country Club, where Dick has won many club championships in golf. Dick, a retired banker in his hometown of Adrian, still keeps active,, playing golf regularly, mowing his lawn, and working in his garden. He winters in New Smyrna Beach, Fla. Although Dick has not been back to Hanover since my graduation, he keeps his eye on Dartmouth through the Alumni Magazine and the Review. When he and I are together, we discuss the current events at Dartmouth, and this often leads to Dick's stories of his days at the College." How great to reach 90 in such fine shape, and to have such a thoughtful grandson, so proud of his granddad! Pat and I have a most pleasant recollection of a visit with Dick on the Hanover Inn terrace at the time of Benjamin's graduation.
From Dresden, Maine, came a newsy note from Hope and A 1 Frey about their summer visitors. While the Freys' guests did not include any classmates, their Dartmouth visitors included two sons of '2O Peggy and Jim Vail '50, and George Sampson, son of Harry Sampson, with his bride, Winifred. George is an Amherst graduate with a master's in fine arts from Columbia and has been an arts consultant in New York City. A1 writes that the couple plan to take up "permanent residence" in Albuquerque, N.M. "Go West, young man!" is still potent advice, it seems.
A 1 and Hope celebrated his August birthday at Orr's Island with his daughter, Janet, her husband, Ed Harte '45, two granddaughters, three great-granddaughters, and Al's sister, Marcia Haynes (husband, Charles '27).
