Should this column be submitted? It comes as a debilitating shock to realize that, ten days before deadline, I do not have any copy to enter into my friendly word processor. How could this happen to your diligent reporter? Usually, some news arrives from the alumni office regarding classmate activity: promotions, new ventures, accolades for past achievements, etc. Have we peaked? I know that a number of us have retired to a life of leisure, but most are still gainfully employed, either in business or serving in the not-for-profit world. I always have had a cadre of faithful correspondents and newspaper clippers, and I have been grateful to them over the past three years. But the mail has been very, very light recently.
Well, the solution is to report on the Dartmouth Night activities before they happen, and that is OK because you will not be reading this column until a couple of months after the fact.
Once again, on Friday, October 16, we enjoyed the traditional 1954 pre-parade cocktail reception and buffet before the clamorous alumni parade, bonfire, and post-bonfire class reception. On Saturday morning Class President Jerry Goldstein presided over a class meeting attended by members of the executive committee and other classmates on hand for the weekend. Many of those classmates who attended the Yale game supplemented their tailgate lunches with bloody marys provided by Clark and Donna Davis. We are grateful to Clark for keeping the faith with his great grandmother's recipe for "Maude's Old Juice." After the game most of us gathered for the class cocktail reception at the faculty lounge and terrace at the Hopkins Center.
Later, the intrepid weekenders forged onward to Steve and Carol Mullins' farmhouse in Norwich. There we enjoyed cocktails and a buffet dinner in a massive, boisterous celebration of our "60th birthday." About 75 classmates, wives, dates, offspring, and guests were on hand for this splendid event. By the way, does that mean we are now into our seventh decade?
