Great to talk with '48 vice president John Hatheway, now a resident of Hanover after his long career with Young & Rubican. John has also worked hard for Dartmouth in many capacities since graduation. He recently was appointed chairman of Dartmouth's new Public Affairs Advisory Committee. This group of 13 nationally prominent alumni in various fields of communication was formed to counsel President Freedman's administration on issues where Dartmouth's public image may be involved. All alumni who have Dartmouth's best interests at heart have to hope that John and his committee of alumni professionals can make a substantive contribution to Dartmouth's future by helping ensure that the public (and we alumni) receive at all times a fully accurate picture of what's going on in Hanover. This should benefit Eleazar's entire family, if you wonder about the accuracy of some of today's media coverage. John and Pat also hosted a Yale game '48 mini-reunion luncheon in their home, and they saw Dave and Joyce Kurr when the latter brought their '92 daughter back to Hanover in September. John saw old compatriot Moose Concannon in Connecticut a few weeks ago when they played golf, probably on the course designed by Moose. He met Bud Gedney and LloydKrumm with wives at the Smoyer Lounge (under Thompson Arena) party after the Yale hockey game last Friday evening. (Dartmouth lost but looked better than last yearjohn said.)

A common denominator for many '48s is the reminiscent laughter that goes back to our initial semesters in 1944-45 when we were civilians in Crosby, Wheeler and Richardson. A talk with Bob Cormack brought such laughter recendy when he recalled rooming that '44 summer with Bill Attwood and Gordie Marm in Crosby, each waiting for Uncle Sam's finger. He also remembers with glee how "Huck" Hoekelman tried to expropriate the Cormack surname during Spring Weekend in '45 (for a blind date) before Uncle Sam got them both. Bob spent 18 years with IBM, was to move the tenth time, and decided instead to head to beautiful Peterborough near Mt. Monadnock, where he's been in real estate the 18 years since. He sends greetings to his old Crosby gang.

Judge Dick Barlow, now in his 17th year at Trenton's Superior Court, also remembers that summer semester in 1944. He and BudThome, close friends all their lives, roomed together in the southwest corner on the ground floor of Wheeler, a perfect vantage point for monitoring campus events. Priming of these two results in many stories of active fellow Wheelerites Cairns, Garrison, Poole, at al, plus the omnipresent Nelson K. Wormwood. Dick also fondly recalls his senior days as a Phi Psi, when he was a friend of FritzMcTarnahan and roomed with Ed Leede. The latter will never be forgotten by His Honor for the carefully planned entertainment Ed provided behind the gym during a Big Green baseball game at graduation time in 1949: he careened his car at high speed across the outfield several times in a tirescreaming exhibition of Indianapolis 500 skill which diverted the players (Emil Hudak '50 was pitching) and enthralled the entire crowd, perhaps excluding Dean L.K. Neidlinger. Dick sends greetings to his old pal and hopes Ed still drives as well today.
