I enjoyed seeing a few '48's recently at a dinner given in New York City to get the 59 Alumni Fund campaign off to a good start. Russ Carlson, who has been doing such a terrific job as head class agent came down from Syracuse for the occasion. Among the others at the '48 table were Jim SchaeferJohn Hatheway, Fran Hummel, Irv Tuttle and Joe Hickman. Russ brought with him some interesting statistics comparing Dartmouth '48's giving habits with the Class of '48 from the other seven Ivy League Schools. Dartmouth's '48 giving percentage was the highest of the eight schools with 68%, leading Princeton by 4 percentage points. Princeton '48's led the other schools in the average gift category with $21.68 per gift with Dartmouth fourth at $15.63. This year I hope we can come up ahead in every category. With a little more effort on everyone's part, I know our upward trend of last year will be continued during these last months of our Capital Gifts Campaign.
Russ also showed me a very newsy letter from Treasurer Johnny Fenno. It seems that in addition to his duties at the Michigan Mushroom Co. and the terrific job he's doing as President of the Dartmouth Class Treasurers Association, Johnny ran for Alderman in his district this spring. The election was April 6 and we wish him good luck even though I've not as yet heard the results.
It was certainly good to hear from DickBredenberg whom we missed at reunion last year. Dick received his Ph.D. in Religious Education this spring from New York University and he and his family are now back at Alfred University where Dick is Chaplain of the University and Professor of Religion. Dick's wife, Huldah, has also been teaching in the School of Theology.
The letter I'd been awaiting from Trenton finally arrived with news that Dick and Jane Barlow's first little papoose made its arrival on March 12, and was named, naturally, Richard Joseph Shaw Barlow III. This prospective third generation Indian ought not to have much trouble getting a room reservation for I'm sure his proud Daddy has already sent his application form in to the Admissions Office.
Recently a Cleveland, Ohio, paper carried a very interesting article on the financial pages on Scane Bowler. Scane is Treasurer of the general insurance agency of Hopkinson, Burridge Pearse Co., and recently became President of the newly formed Western Reserve Life Assurance Co. Western Reserve Life is the first new life company formed in Ohio in 40 years. Besides all this Scane is President of' the Bahamas Hotel in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. It sounds as if he bought the hotel to get a vacation ... he must need it with all his activities. The Bowlers have two children, Scott, six and Lynn, three years old.
The high honor of being named one of 25 American Medical Scholars to receive a grant from the Markle Foundation for $30,000 was given Dr. Jerold Lucey. At present he is Assistant Professor of Pediatrics in the University of Vermont College of Medicine. Dr. Lucey was nominated by the University of Vermont for this award. A graduate of New York University Medical School with an internship at Bellevue, Dr. Lucey has won several fellowships and scholarships during the past few years to do research in Pediatrics. This is also the purpose of his present grant.
Another doctor in the class who has been awarded a medical grant for research is Jim Hudson, who is attached to the Massachusetts Memorial Hospital in Boston. Jim has been awarded a three-year medical research fellowship by the Medical Foundation Inc. for the pursuit of basic research on the kidneys and a disease of the kidneys called pyelonephritis. Jim also is an instructor at Boston University School of Medicine.
I have been waiting for a letter from Dick Greene for quite some time, but he has had a good excuse. Dick has just been elected a Research Associate of Eaton and Howard Inc., a Boston investment management firm. Dick is a specialist in the paper, building, and insurance industries.
In addition to his family of five children and his job as Assistant to the Vice President of Systems Operations of Avis car rental, Joe Hackett is running for Park Commissioner of his home town of Holbrook, Mass. He is responsible for basketball and tennis courts at the playgrounds and also various other programs necessary for children's recreation. Joe is also coaching both a little league team and minor league. If Joe's teams are doing as well as he did when a member of the Green varsity, I'm sure they are leading their leagues.
As a result of Ken Saunders' previously announced promotion to head of the Accident and Health Department's sales promotion and market research for Continental Casualty Co., he has been promoted to assistant vicepresident of the company. Keep going, Ken.
Now that spring is here, I hope all you 48's who have been waiting to rid yourself of that winter pallor can enjoy yourself to the fullest as you crank up that old lawn mower again. Until next month, happy cutting!
