Our classmate Werner Kuhn died on September 23, 1990, in Los Angeles of complications from AIDS. Although the obituary column will no doubt address the specific personal aspects of his death, Werner's life and death bring into focus, perhaps more than any other, how important it is for Dartmouth to attract and nurture the growth of people with diversity of belief, ethnic, racial, and sexual persuasions. Werner utilized his personal strengths, Dartmouth experience, business and legal degrees earned at Columbia, to work in leadership positions for causes that he believed in: working as an environmental attorney, giving his time to mental health causes, and serving as a leader, in New York, California, and nationally, to fight for the rights of the gay community and of AIDS victims. Werner was at Dartmouth at a time when it did not have, nor respect to the extent we do today, diversity in lifestyles, or other things. Many of us who knew him did not know of Werner's sexual orientation, but we knew of his concern for humanity. It was not easy being different at Dartmouth in 1964; in Werner's case that difference made an impact on the world around us.
Paul Feinberg was appointed senior vice president and general counsel of The Copeland Companies, East Brunswick, N.J. Paul is very much enjoying running the legal affairs of this nationally known corporation which is in the business of marketing, selling, and administering tax-sheltered annuities to nonprofit organizations. Prior to his appointment Paul held senior vice president and general counsel positions for Integrated Resources and Prudential Insurance Company's mutual fund division. When Paul is not working, he and his wife of 19 years, Diane, are living in Randolph, N. J., and raising their three boys.
I met Steve Roberts in Hanover recently at the Club Officers' Weekend. Steve deserves a tremendous amount of credit for the hard work and leadership role which he has had for years with the Dartmouth Club Officers' Association. He has served as president and on the steering committee of that organization for years, assisting in the planning and development of club activities, as well as being active in enrollment activities in the Hartford, Conn., area. Steve and his wife Nancy live in Connecticut with their three sons, one of whom, David, is class of '92. Steve works with Cigna Investments as a vice president in investments in Bloomfield, Conn. The news was sparse this month, please keep it coming.
