Late in February, June and I went over to Sarasota to take in a portion of the Chrysler Cup Golf Classic at Prestancia. It was fun watching golfing friends participate with the pros, but the highlight of the excursion was an evening at the Burnt Store Marina in Punta Gorda, where PhylEngland and Bob and Tanna Fernald hosted a gathering of '36 associates. The guests of honor were to have been Dave and ShirleyFox, east from Washington State on a prereunion dry-run, but Dave opted to try hospital food in Vero Beach and they were unable to attend. (Reports now have it that Dave's problems are under control and that they're back in Seattle and ready to return to Hanover for the June reunion gathering.)
The Hills and the Builters barely made it, as house numbers are not too obvious, but once there we found Frank and Marj Curtis (and Marj's sister), Al and Jane Gibney, and Harry and Rose Coronis as the reception committee. Bill and Stina Martens had come down from the Tampa area, and PeggyLancaster just flew in from chilly New England. Fred Babcock, coming over from Cypress Lodge, didn't have far to travel, but several relatives of Dave Macomber and Phyl dropped in from Louisiana and New England ... a truly fun evening.
Harry Coronis tells me that the fall '91 trip to Greece is definitely "ON," regardless of Desert Storm (now thankfully ended) or the temporary recession (hopefully on its way out).
Tithe and multiple mailings have kept you all abreast of the plans for our 55th in Hanover, June 10-12. The early response is most gratifying, and Ray Builter thanks all who have sent in their reservation checks. To those of you who for one reason or another have held back saying "YES," this is almost the last call. Name badges can always be made up at the last moment (even the ones from the 50th will do, if you can still find them!) but for the jackets, if somewhat proper fit is desired, we do need a close count. Travel facilities are hurting for customers and gas prices are down, so I urge you all to cast aside all reservations except those for a date with some 200-plus '36 associates, and join us next month in sunny and warm Hanover. (Remember how hot it could be as we took our finals in the gym?)
And then, before you put away your check book and pen, scratch a note and a check to the '91 Alumni Fund and the 55th Reunion Gift. Clay Mellor, the Reunion Committee, and the College all will thank you.
Hope to see you all in June.
