As the Thirtyteer has informed you, on June 18 we lost Lee Chilcote, vice president, and throughout the past 65 years one of the most active, devoted, and respected members of our class. No obituary, within present space limitations, could do justice to his career. In this issue you'll find the excellent obituary prepared at Lee's request by close friend Pete Callaway. Milt Mclnnes has provided the additional coverage. We express our condolences to Virginia and hope she will consider herself forever a classmate.

The May Atamni Magazine (the latest issue available as I write this in July) lists 42 alumni deaths but has only seven obituaries, all pertaining to 1990 deaths. While not starring necrologically, our Mag has just won Newsweek's Sibley Award for 1991 as the best periodical in higher education. Editor Jay Heinrichs generously congratulates the class secretaries "for writing the most-read part of the magazine every issue," and I congratulate Jay and staff for competently filling the big shoes left behind by Charlie Widmayer.

Reunion Chief Burt Crandell has pulled a coup in signing up the College's new VP/treasurer Ms. Lyn Hutton as Saturday night guest speaker for our September 27-28 mini. With an impressive background, she is in much demand as a speaker and was at the top of Burt's wish-list. You'd better be there.

A recent note from Van VanDerbeck sounds healthy enough, but he says, "my rheumatoid arthritis makes my writing look like chicken scratching." Not really.

The summer column, written in May, mentioned Milt's polymyalgia. Now he's fallen and injured his back. It's hard to say which is contributing more to his discomfort. I sympathize, being no stranger to back problems.

Like people, great institutions also pass. Reliable sources tell me that Campion's is having a going-out-of-business sale.
