This may be December, but to me today is October 7, and I'm still focussed on a fine mini-reunion. Not weatherwise and certainly not the football, but everything else was great. There were 45 at the Friday meeting, 12 at the Bema for Saturday lunch (Condons, Pete Davis, Ellie French,Haffenreffers, Lows, McClorys, JohnTiedtke, and Mart), and 71 at the Saturday dinner, all down just a few from last year's count.
The class dinner was one of our best, with Messrs. Haffenreffer and Widmayer outdoing each other in eloquence over the virtues of class awardees Ellie French and Henry Hillson. Our guest, Prof. Bruce Pipes, spoke with interest and wit, and demonstrated some basic scientific principles. We brought the weekend to its traditional close with a heart-rending "Men of Dartmouth."
Several absentees at least checked in: Dobbin and Betty Granger transferred from their summer to their winter address. Randy and Vera Hobbs, after summering in Connecticut, spent a fortnight in Tenerife and a month on the Costa del Sol before returning to Florida. Art Olsen was unable to attend but hopes to in 1988. Pat Patterson attributes his absence to a new pacemaker and two cataract extractions with implants.
I can account for John and Flavia Marsh, with whom I enjoyed lunch in Clearwater September 14. John, with a county-wide agency handling life, accident, and health insurance, remains one of our few gainfully employed. I can also account for Dick Bowlen, seen at the game but not the Woodstock events. All three look fine.
Carll Buhler was incarcerated in Eastern Long Island Hospital from mid-August to late September with a blood infection and an optimistic prognosis. He was well enough to report that Phoebe, the 1930 manatee, of which he is the adoptive father, left Blue Springs for the summer March 25, pursued by a passel of juvenile males. She is known to have produced five calves, and you can see why.
For health reasons Joe Placak has relinquished the secretaryship of his Medical School class to Dave Latham. Joe and wife Edna have moved permanently to a nursing facility and can be addressed at Room 225, St. Lukes Hospital, Columbus, NC 28722. A note would be welcome.
Holiday greetings.
