OH, SCHUSS. The publicity release from Vermont Academy arrived last Spring, but never made the 500-word cut. Until now. The gist of the story was conveyed in a picture caption: "Olympian Warren Chivers, his son and grandson stand in front of the Warren S. Chivers Ski and Outdoor Education Center... The Center is designed to honor Chivers' more than fifty years of service to the Academy."
FIFTY, AND COUNTING. Sandy Mills came up with yet another entry in the class's burgeoning Golden Wedding Brigade. Frankand Mary Cannell were enrolled last June. As Sandy put it, "It was a beautiful and memorable time. No spirits were served, nor were they missed—a far cry, as Frank recalls, from his Dartmouth days at Tanzi's, drinking beer with his cronies and Prof. Schlossmacher (sp?)[sic]."
SHORT TAKES. Dave Choate, of the Essex, Mass., Choates, is doing a little consulting, an exercise emerging as a '38 euphemism for keeping bee-busy. Ell Herrick hopes to get to Hanover next month for the (Second Notice!) mini-reunion. He spoke with DonBoyle recently. All's well.
TREASURE ISLANDS. That's what Whitey Leyrer makes the exotic Marquesas sound like. He should know. He and Marion first flew to Tahiti (sigh), then sailed in a supply ship, with a limited number of other passengers, via the Tuomotus to the Golden Islands. The arrival of a supply ship is happiness bigtime for the natives, who line the shores in eager anticipation. Shades of Hope, Crosby, and Lamour. Whitey sees fellow Tacomans Morgan Marshall and Charlie Keys. The former made a summertime trip east, while the latter has been travel-restricted by a winsome, but demanding, new dog.
BEHIND EVERY GOOD MAN DEPT. Bob Munsey was unavailable (out for the evening) when a roving reporter called, but his charming wife, Jean, did the honors for the family. Bob is still "doing orthopedics," helping in surgery, and of course, consulting. Jean attended her Wells College 50th Reunion, reporting that that institution is still unisex, feminine gender. When politely pressed to define the meaning of "out for the evening," a poker-faced Jean explained that "It means he's out playing cards."
HAIL COLUMBIA. South Carolina, that is, home of Steve "Bull" Adams. Bull, who attended our 45 th but missed our 50th, mentions having fond memories of his classmates. That's us.
Here's a neat one. Confirmed Southerner Bull met Yankee Greenwich, Conn., via his highly prized Aston Martin. The tab for its repair not only boggles the mind, but projects overtones of bygone carpetbagger days. No wonder the South seceded.
