QUIET LIFE IS ONE BIG GAMBOL, at least it was for the 26 '38ers and wives who enjoyed a salubrious two-day outing in and around Big Green pastures a while back.
A troop of "Fletcher" golfers played Hanover the first day and the Quechee Highland course the next, savoring cocktails and dinner at the DOC house along the way.
Among those present were: Marion andParker Holden, Betty and Luke Nims,Claire and Bob Reeve, Fran and GilTanis, Toni and Ben Walkley, Marionand Bob Reno, and Peggy and Elliot Herrick. Also, Jane and Paul Feakins, MaryHelen and Bob Hallock, Betty and JimMiller, Ginny and Jim Chandler, Annand Jack Graham, Bill Mosenthal, and Dick Francis.
In all, 11 classmates and seven wives played golf. The assumption is the other eight ate.
Dick Francis, our source reports, "acted as coach and advisor to both sexes." He probably coached the golfers, but, 'tis wondered, what did he advise and whom? In any event it was Jack Graham who fetched the "Fletch." And, by the way, does anyone out there know what the real Fletcher's first name was?
MINI-MEMO RE MINI-REUNION. On the off chance that this issue arrives before the reunion date, here's a final reminder: October 13-14. Dartmouth Night. Yale game. Do it!
THERE'S A FJORD IN HIS FUTURE. Peripatetic Bill Sherman and his roommate of 44 years will, if they haven't already, take a fortnight's holiday in Norway and Sweden. How very Scandinavian of them. Speaking of his bride, Bill mentioned that she'll soon be on Medicare and he'll soon be sleeping with a senior citizen.
JUST FOR THE "H" OF IT. "I was surprised to see my name in the '38 Class Notes ... I can't figure why my position is not firmly up in arms about the situation in Hanover ... I have checked on my Mac and I can't find where I have written to you about my thoughts and ideas on the Hanover scene . .In his recent letter CharlieHitchcock was referring to the column in the Summer issue in which mention was made of the differing points of view about Dartmouth today held by Bill Sherman and Charlie Hathaway. Zounds ... the gremlins and their glitch brigade really did a number on this one! Apologies to Charlie (whose note, by the way, was of the kinder, gentler variety) for any embarrassment, inconvenience, or frustration this slip may have caused. It did serve two good purposes, however: 1) it brought forth the news that Charlie was going to play golf with BradJenkins at al on Brad's Duxbury course, and 2) it indicates that this column has at least one reader other than its perpetrator.
