THE FIRST OFFICIAL downhill ski race in the East was held in 1927 at Moosilauke and billed as the Dartmouth Ski Championship. The course covered four and a half miles, down the Carriage Road from the junction with the Glencliff Trail to the Moosilauke Inn. In subsequent races it was shortened to 2.8 miles,

ending at the Hurricane Trail junction... John McCrillis '19 produced the first U.S. film of a downhill race in 1931.... Inspired by the Moosilauke races, McCrillis and Otto Schniebs published one of the first ski manuals in English, Modern Ski Technique, in 1932....The first National Downhill Championship was held at Moosilauke on the Carriage Road in January 1933. More than 100 students from the Outing Club helped set up and run the race. Henry S. Woods '36, later captain of the ski team, came in first....The first Collegiate Giant Slalom was held on the mountain's Dipper Trail in 1948.
