Among this month's news: Malcolm Jones has been named regional chair for the special gifts effort in Dartmouth's $425 million Will to Excel campaign. He is responsible for the 14-state Far West region. In addition, as regional chair he sits on the national special gifts executive committee. Malcolm is a vice president at Kidder Peabody in Los Angeles, working in the public-finance field on the underwriting table.

Michael Ross, president and CEO of Arris Pharmaceutical in San Francisco and former president and CEO of Genentech, was honored at the kickoff of the capital gifts campaign on November IS in New York City as one of the alumni honorees chosen by a panel of alumni, faculty, and administrators to receive the Presidential Medal for Outstanding Leadership and Achievement. Criteria included exemplifying Dartmouth's educational mission and values; becoming role models in career and volunteer work; significant volunteer and personal contributions to higher education; and impact on society. Honorees were selected as representatives of the many Dartmouth alumni who have made, and continue to make, significant contributions to society.

Michael received his doctoral degree at California Institute of Technology and was a post-doctoral fellow in biochemistry and molecular biology at Harvard. He joined Genentech as a senior scientist and director of protein biochemistiy, became its vice president of development in 1984, vice president of medicinal and biomolecular chemistry three years later, and its president in 1990.

Curt Welling, a former managing director at First Boston Corp., head of its capital markets division, and later in charge of its 450-person equity operation, joined the Duval Group, an international merger and acquisition boutique.

Richard Harvey was named president and elected as a director of BNY Associates, a Boston-based investment banking subsidiary of the Bank of New York providing private placement and merger and acquisition services.

Gary Partenheimer has been awarded the Litchard Faculty Fellowship for Excellence in Teaching at Northfield Mount Hermon School in Northfield and Gill, Mass. Gary joined the Biblical and religious studies department there in 1977, has served as department head, and also coaches soccer and ice hockey. He has twice been awarded grants by the National Endowment for the Humanities for summer study. He received his master's of divinity from the Episcopal Divinity School.

Scott Rosenblum, an international law specialist, recently joined the 125-lawyer New York firm of Kramer, Levin, Nessen, Kamin & Frankel.
