The big news for me this month is that I've got a new job! After six years with Leucadia National Corporation, I have decided to continue working in the acquisitions area, but to focus on investing for my own account rather than working as a salary man for someone else. I resigned from Leucadia at the end of 1991 and formed the Channel Investment Group with some partners. We invest in smaller (less than $20 million in sales) companies which sell products through the mass merchandising channel (Home Depot, Price Club, Target, etc.) Please note the new phone and FAX numbers: 415/ 552-4604 and 861-4286, respectively. Call especially if you have any leads; we happily pay finders fees!
In other job-related news, Eric Miller was recently promoted to vice president and general manager of the central region for American Appraisal Associates, where he is responsible for valuation consulting, business development, and professional standards. With interest rates at a historical low, Eric is likely to be one busy boy right about now. Dr. Dan Rideout has joined the medical staff of Springfield Hospital, where he will pursue his interest in preventative medicine in relation to gastrointestinal diseases and malignancies.
In an article entitled "A Biotech Cocktail That Could Stop AIDS Cold," Business Week reports that Don Drakeman-led Medarex has developed a bispecific antibody which enables immune cells to connect with and kill the AIDS virus much more readily. The company is hoping to start tests of the antibody on humans next year.
President Roger Clarkson sent me that letter he promised, and it was chock-full of classmate news, making it well worth the wait. A few tidbits: "This was Club Officers Weekend, and our very own Bob Jamieson (L.A.Club) was chosen Club President of the Year. Saw Bob Sullivan here for the weekend. There were some big layoffs at Sports Illustrated, but he wasn't one of them. I get the feeling that he is one of those guys who will some day move back to Hanover. Also saw Mark Ditmar in Hanover for the first time in years. He's a doc in New York and is engaged. We are trying to put something together for a mini-reunion at Winter Carnival—Bill Cahill is planning a non-stop 48-hour party.
Last but certainly not least, MIA HalMacartney responded to the call with a terrific letter: "Your articles find me in Midland, Texas, home of I'il baby Jessica (who fell down the well) and former home of President George Bush [who is getting ready to fall down the well—B.W.]. I work for Texaco and currently am assigned as assistant to die division manager. Until '89 I was in Denver, where I saw a lot of Dave Farmer, construction magnate and formidable rugby player, and BobVaeth, a commercial real-estate broker now ensconced back in Baltimore. Austin Murr was there too and is also now in Texas. He's an upper-level kind of guy at Maxus Petroleum in Dallas. I'm married to Sandy, who so far has borne two children, Lily 5 and lan 3, and is carrying a third due in April. They are the light of my life."
This month, MIA stands for "Macartney is Alive." How about: Rob Arndt Charles CornishRobin Felix Jerome TaylorThomas Meigs Caroline PrestonJudd Gold Maudlin Wright I walked abroad in a snowy day; I ask'd the soft snow with me to play: She play'd & she melted in all her prime And die winter call'd it a dreadful crime.
