The Date: November, 1977. The Game: Dartmouth vs. Harvard. The Venue: Cambridge, Mass. The Play: a last minute field goal which hit the cross bar. The Winner: "It's a small college but we love her." What a win that was, and an extraordinary moment in this pea-green memory. This month—20 years, one wife, and two children later—l will be returning to Boston's Soldier Field as the green leaves turn to crimson and the two colors meet on the gridiron once again. Lou Ann and I hope to see many of our '75 friends there, tailgating on the Charles and reminiscing about that magical fall two decades ago.
I've got some good news and some bad news. The bad news is that I will not be able to write next month's column, as Lou and I will be on our "no kids" vacation. The good news is that I've recruited a much more able reporter than myself, one Thomas W. Wood. Tom has generously agreed to "ghost" the Winter column in my absence. Many thanks, Tom. One warning: class secretary elections are only a few years away!
This column is all good news, beginning with a communique from our revered Prez Roger Clarkson. "News of classmates: Mike Sandoe just sold his real-estate company in Lebanon in order to give him more time to pursue other ventures. He, Peter Johnson,Chris Nice, Jeff Sassorossi, Steve Sargent, and I are resident '75s who have stuck around here to make sure that our class is well-represented in Hanover. I think we have a combined contribution to the Hanover School System of 17 kids!" Roger also noted that our head agent (and my ex-roomie), Jim "Bozo"Bildner, set a new record for dollars raised by a class 16 years out. Those of you who know Jimbo will understand just what a significant accomplishment that really is.
Prez Roger Dodger failed to mention classmate Mark Burgess in his list of local '75s. Maybe it's because Mark was just named Realtor of the Year (in a close election) by the Hanover-Lebanon Board of Realtors. Mark has been working in the real-estate profession in the Hanover area for the past five years.
H.B. "Tom" Thomson III was recently named a senior research analyst at Wheat, First Securities, and will follow retail and consumer goods stocks. Tom has been a senior investment banker in the firm's corporate finance department for most of the last 12 years (except for a short stint at Standard Commercial corporation), specializing in the retail and consumer goods industries. Mr. Thomson can be reached in the Wheat, First Richmond office at 804/782-3534.
Finally, this bit of news from Dan Wright who writes, "Mike 'Pappy' Paplow tied the knot in Knantucket on August 5 when he married Kristy Swope. It was an elopement of sorts as they told only two people of their plans until the knight before the wedding, when they each called their parents." Dan felt compelled to send me a picture to prove that the event had indeed taken place. Pappy is resplendent in his tuxedo jacket and jeans (sans socks), Kristy beautifully (and more traditionally) attired in a white gown. Kristy is an attorney in Columbus, Ohio, where Pappy is an architect. As for Dan, "I remain happily unmarried. I am a bookseller on the midcoast of Maine, and I'm becoming an expert best man."
