Once again autumn has fallen, with the Big Green turning every color but. As you read this latest epistle, Lou Ann and I are feasting on the beauty of Appalachia as we drift down the New River, camping our way through North Carolina and Virginia.
Lou and I had the distinct pleasure of joining David Wendell (better known to many as Woodah) and his wife Cathy at their new restaurant, The Mackinaw Inn, in Tahoe City, Calif., last month. The Mackinaw is definitely the hottest thing to hit the north shore of Lake Tahoe in many years, and Woo was right at home schmoozing a full house. Featuring "regional American cooking," the Inn is done in the traditional New England style, complete with a long porch for diners who wish to watch the moon while they spoon (and fork). If our experience was representative, David has a real winner on his hands.
Great letter from Ralph Fletcher, who gives an update on his current affairs. "My wife Jo Ann and I just had a son (my first child, her third): Robert Pontaloupi Fletcher. My mother figures if he can spell his middle name (Jo Arm's family name) the kid'll be a genius. He was born on May 21, 8 lb. 9 oz., and already shows distinct signs of being a Boston Celtics fan! Other good news my book Walking Trees: Teaching Teachers in the New York City Schools will be published by Heinemann Books in October. P.S. What ever happened to Chris "The Dolphin" Monigle?"
