Practical politics consists in ignoring the facts. HenryAdams, 1906 So, who will be in the White House come November? Peter Arnold was
a Tsongas man himself. Peter may know the inside track in D.C., as he became a speech writer for the White House after graduation under an affirmative action plan for Republicans, he likes to say. But, our man sold out... Peter now works closely with Jody Powell (former President Carter's former press secretary) at her corporate communications firm (otherwise known as PR). Also having his due with the government is Erik Warga. Erik works for the Commerce Department, ferreting out cases of unfair trade practices. He travels frequently and was recently in New Zealand. Seems someone was "dumping" woolen products; Erik was sent to act as an interloper in the matter.
And now for the erudite gang. Yes, it is confirmed, Alex Gutterman is going for his doctorate in philosophy at UC Berserkeley. Also partaking in higher education are KathyZimmerman Bennett and Jim Bennett. Kathy is going for her master's in accounting and Jim for his doctorate in economics, both at the University of Texas.
Bennett Cho has also received an advanced degree, his in architecture from Yale. Bennett works as an architect in New Haven. AnneScvorak is in pursuit of her doctorate in biology at Tufts. Tim Johnson is in his third year of residency at the University of Vermont Medical School. Rumor has it that Tim is specializing cardiology.
Making it into our "Brush with Fame" club is Jillian Nickelson, who was the subject of a laudatory article in a Sunbury, Penn., newspaper. Jillian grew up in Pennsylvania but now lives in Utah, where she is a first-year medical student at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. The article described how Jillian surmounted her bout with Ewing's sarcoma, a form of bone cancer, through surgery and chemotherapy, and now wants to become a physician herself. Alicia Papke also had a "brush with fame," recently being mentioned in the New Hampshire Business Review for her promotion to associate at Wiggin and Nourie, Penn.
Espousing throwing caution to the wind is Erik Bakeman, who is starting his own consulting firm in Athens (Ohio, that is). The firm will concentrate on custom engineering software. John Bodi is the concessions manager for the athletic department at Boston University. He is getting married in October and will be moving to the Princeton area. Jerry D'Amelia will also be getting married soon July for him. He is an assistant district attorney in Orange County (New York, not California unfortunately!).
And how is this for a hot job: MargaretTaylor is manager of communications and marketing for Clicquot Inc., makers of the fine champagne. We were probably all drinking some of Margaret's vintage at AliciaMaori's wedding. Alicia was married in February in New York. Among the brides-maids were Jessica Cohn Healy, Karin Bravin, June Palumbo Meyer '85, Margaret Taylor, and Lynne Ten Hoopen. John Paterson and his wife, Samantha, attended the event, as well as Anne Mahoney, who flew in from California. Debra Rudich also made it down to New York from Boston, where she will graduate from Harvard Business School this spring.
News flash: Debbie Griffin has moved back to the Boston area from Cincinnati, so all of her buddies near Beantown should give her a ring.
