35 In early May the Class Officers Weekend attracted 535 people (including spouses and guests) to Hanover for a program which was both informative and entertaining. Our class was well represented by ten men and nine wives. We are still a long way from being the oldest to attend such a function, as 14 classes from 1921 to 1934 were ahead of us.
Even though we have not yet fully recovered from the recession, the capital campaign is going very well. In this connection BucksWeil remarks that he sees no reason to punish the College by withholding contributions just because ROTC will no longer be available. Bill Hands vividly recalls the real depression by reporting that his first employer promised him (along with Sven Karlen and others) either a raise to $35 per week or dismissal after six months. Then he and Alice (who was making $20 a week) were able to get married. They celebrated their 55th Anniversary last year.
Rudy Pacht reports that he and Helen saw Phyllis and Charlie Nayor as well as Beeand Lew Peck in L.A. (before the riots). CamDuncan reports that he cannot add news of classmates because "there just ain't any down in these parts" (San Antonio, Tex.), but he claims the fishing is good. We received a delightful photograph of Ed Gerson and his new bride, Joy Newfield, clipped from the Hartford, Conn., Courant. Apparently they were sweediearts long ago in high school, then both married other spouses who passed away in the 1980s, and now life is simply beautiful. The weekend magazine of the daily Newport Beach, Calif., newspaper published a wonderful color photograph of a lean, fit, and distinguished Ed Ramsey, the oldest (at 78) runner in a long-distance event which drew at least 10,000 entries. Another color photo was of Earl Arthurs with a spectacular young lady named Darmita who, he explained, was an example of the outstanding scenery of Hawaii. This may be why he loves his traveling job which recently took him to Africa, India, Thailand, Singapore, Bali, and Australia.
To end on a sad note, 49 of our classmates have passed away during the past two years. With a heavy heart we report those not heretofore mentioned: Fred Axelrod, CarlyleCrane, Cush Cushman, Bill Harwick, ErnieHedler, Frank Hermes, Dick Kenney, BobMorse, Bob Rackliff, Roy Ruether, andBoyd Rogers.
