Last winter the swinging geriatric set laid on a "wingding" in Sarasota hosted by Lois and Bob McLellen and Liz and Don Koehler. Among those attending were Anne Ferries, Gwen and KenWebster, Charlotte and Ev Dann, Frank and Ralph Specht with respective spouses Edie and Trudie, Alison and Joe Fellows,Dot and Bill Russell, Laura and ReyMoulton, and Al Ritchie. The Bob Richters and the Paul VanAntwerpens unfortunately missed the fun.
Florrie Fitzhugh, Bill's bride of 50 years, very successfully chaired the Norwich Bicentennial Committee (Vermont is celebrating its becoming the 14th state). One of the outstanding events was an original play by a Norwich author, Nicholas Biel, who is really classmate Nick Jacobson.
Chuck Dinneen passed on a gossip column by Suzy of the New York Post describing a book party given by the Abe Rosenthals for "Ardie" Deutsch, of the Beverly Hills Deutsches. Ardie had just written Me and Bogie, a tale of adventures and misadventures "from a life in Hollywood and beyond." People like Dan Rather, Barbara Walters, and Estee Lauder, to name a few, attended the soiree.
Sel Hannah, the well-known designer of ski areas, has just donated a conservation easement in Franconia, N.H., covering 500 acres of forest, 20 acres of wetlands, and 120 acres of farm and hay fields. This was one of the largest land protections ever completed in Northern New England.
From deep in the heart of Texas, CamDuncan bemoans the growing list of classmates no longer with us.
Joe and Solveig Sholkin just returned from their annual visit to Nicaragua and Norway and they found that conditions in Nicaragua were pretty dismal compared to the standard of living in Norway.
Sam Milesky, having finally acquired a Senior Cane through the Dartmouth Co-op, now believes he is a complete Dartmouth graduate. He and his wife, Ruth, celebrated their 50th a year ago while Dud and BetteRussell did so this year. Rey Moulton, back in Maine from Florida and recovering from a serious bout with cancer, is looking forward to our fall mini-reunion October 11-12. Lowell Haas submitted a delightful and amusing description (too detailed for this column) of his recent surgery, with a complete recovery expected.
George Hoke, a self-styled curmudgeon commenting on the promotion of Dartmouth Life presumably to replace the Dartmouth Review, quotes from old Abe, "A man convinced against his will is of the same opinion still." Perhaps we are all getting so well along that it becomes more and more difficult to change opinions unless of course there are valid reasons to do so.
