Alumni Award: Henry Nachman Jr. '51, T'55
October 1993

How does one cubbyhole this multi-faceted gentleman, this fellow who until recently lived all his life in the heart of downtown New York City yet always preferred walks in the hills to sidewalks; who has been an enormously successful advertising whiz and marketing magician; who can ski with the best of them and has paddled nearly every lake and river in Maine (and there are a million of them); who loves Dartmouth second only to his wife and kids; and who, incidentally, makes the best apple pie this side of Seatde?

How indeed? Slated for Harvard, he yearned for Dart- mouth, and the Green won out. And what a break for us! As the man who can never say no to a Dartmouth assignment, he has served his alma mater in every conceivable way: class executive committee, class agent, class sec- retary, 25th Reunion publicity director, club president and schol- arship chairman, member of the Alumni Council and its major committees, an enrollment work- er and an officer in several major fund drives. A Nachman bench- mark was the resuscitation, under his presidency, of the Dartmouth Club of New York; he breathed new life into an organization whose pulse over the years had been skipping a beat.

Henry's thoroughly Dartmouth family also deserves mention: Robert '82 and Suzy '86, and a supportive and sympathetic wife, Amy, who, incidentally,'works side by side with him in many of his enterprises.

This is especially true in the ski business, which is what his advertising agency has slalomed into. After Dartmouth, two years in the army (Korea and a Purple Heart), and then Tuck, Henry worked in several advertising firms before forming Nachman Associates. He eventu- ally began to concentrate on the ski industry and decided two years ago that Dunster Drive in Hanover made more sense than East 21st Street. Besides, the slopes are better!

Henry has set many goals and willed them to happen. Happily, Dartmouth has been a major beneficiary of his high aspira- tions. In appreciation we are as pleased as a foot of fresh powder to present him with this Dartmouth Alumni Award.
