As a prologue to our 55th reunion in 1977, '22 achieved highly commendable results for the 1976 Alumni Fund. The Class contributed $27,680 against its $26,000 objective. A total of 189 contributors effected a 95.9 participation index. In brief, the last of the small classes once again proved its support in sustaining the Alumni Fund, the most meaningful of all Dartmouth traditions.
Accolades for this heartening achievement go to head class agent Spenny Smith, to memorial gift chairman Dick Stetson and the diligent team of class agents: Ray Atwood, Gray Bates, Bill Bullen, Herm Carlisle, Jack Dana, Warren Daniell, Carroll Dwight, Charlie Earle, Gene Hotchkiss, Max Kenyon, Rex Malmquist, Andy Marshall, Wally Mountcastle, Herm Oliver, Charlie Tapley, Jack Taylor, Charlie Throop, and Duke Vos Burgh. The Class salutes every one of you. And to each classmate and the many wives of departed classmates as well as other relatives and friends — to all who contributed — '22 is deeply grateful for your allegiance to Dartmouth and to her proud Class of 1922.
The success of our 55th reunion next June is now definitely assured: Walter I. Miller has consented to be reunion chairman. Ike, as all classmates appreciate, did an excellent job as chairman for our 45th and 50th reunions. And now, with the abiding encouragement of his gracious wife Harriott, Ike will do the same for our fantastic 55th.
Could it be that this reunion chairmanship honor is contagious for Twoters? Symptomatically, Richard P. Stetson was chairman last May of the 50th reunion of the Harvard Medical Class of 1926. Dartmouth '22 has three distinguished members in the class: Bill Angell,John McKoan, and Dick himself. John and Dick were reuners with about 40 other M.D.s who lodged at the Copley Plaza, attended meetings at Harvard, dined at The Country Club in Brookline, and enjoyed a clambake at Coolidge Point, Manchester by the Sea.
And Gene Hotchkiss brought bright honor to the Class last May when he received the following citation:
"On the occasion of the Silver Anniversary of the Dartmouth Bequest and Estate Planning Program, the Association of Class Bequest Chairmen is proud to honor Eugene Hotchkiss, Class of 1922, as one of six active Bequest Chairmen who have served the College and their Class continuously for twenty-five years in this vital position. His long and dedicated record of service to his Class Bequest Program has been a truly remarkable example of deep commitment to the College and the purposeful cause she represents.
"We are grateful to him for all that he has accomplished to help insure the success of the Dartmouth Bequest Program. We salute him for the twenty-five years of honor and respect he has been accorded by his classmates. And we extend to him our heartfelt best wishes for continuing good fortune in the years to come."
Congratulations from '22 to Gene, Jeanette, and all the Hotchkiss family, and thanks, too, from the Class.
Alas, not all the news is cheerful. The Class has lost Buck Perry, Ted Robie, and KenChamberlain. Obituaries have already appeared or will in future issues. Belated reports have also been received on the deaths of Winslow Morse, February 1, 1973, in San Diego, Calif., and LennoxRhodes, January 10 in Santa Rosa, Calif.
And, most sorrowfully, your secretary heeds the very great loss of Joan Hier who was the class notes editor of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE She was a gracious, competent woman and a true friend of all class secretaries, young and old.
