The recent mention of '48s in Dartmouth football in our early years brought back memories to RollieSontag, who we failed to mention earlier. Rollie recalls that he was "knocked cold" late in the third quarter in the 0-64 rout by Notre Dame in 1944 at Fenway Park. He also played in the Big Green's closer 0-34 loss at South Bend the next year in 1945. Several weeks later that same season, having in the meantime been transferred in the V-12 from Dartmouth to Great Lakes Naval Training Station, he again played the Irish. This time he was finally on the winning side, in a great game, 13-7. (Rollie, how many gridmen have faced N.D. twice in one season?)

Stan Alger and his partner in Hyannis recently terminated their association of 33 years, during which they designed many homes and buildings as successful Cape Cod architects. After his partner retired, Stan and wife Alice formed Architectural Consultants, and they are still busy doing residential work. Stan well remembers that first summer of 1944 in Hanover. He served as practice soccer goalie for Bill Ivins and Howie Westney on Chase Field when the latter two were getting ready for Coach Tom Dent's squad that fall. All three lived on the second floor of Richardson and became immediate friends when they met. (Will all three again meet in Hanover 50 years later at the '48 45 th next June?)

Bob Foster, now of Windsor, Conn., cites a host of memories of '48 classmates. First arriving in Woodward dorm in the fall of '45, Bob roomed down the hall from Paul Branch, later—like Bob—to become an insurance man. Dave Auld and Wendy Griffith lived opposite lan Macartney, Jim Browning '44, and Drury on the floor above him. Bob recalls himself and Jim Browning being the only two students in Professor Dimitroff's astronomy course at the old observatory; a Saturday climb of Mount Lafayette in the Whites with Pete Foster, Browning, and others; and rooming for two years with reunion chairman Lloyd Krumm in Wheeler. They had a laughter-loaded private table along with Ed Curtis,George Gendron, the late Harry Shaw, and Harry Ewing '49 in a Thayer Hall side room. Now a retired insurance executive after a career with The Travelers, Bob credits PaulLiscord, now of Contoocook, N.H., with having gotten him into insurance and into the highly specialized actuarial field, where both men excelled. Bob was one of the nation's few nuclear actuaries, and Paul was president of the very prestigious Casualty Actuarial Society.

Ed Leede '49 phoned from his lair in Denver and asked if he will be welcome at the '48 tent at Reunion next June. He was told, "No, but come anyway. You put on too many great shows during our years in Hanover not to be welcome, and with laughter!" Ed says at least 75,000 people have told him they saw his skilful Indy 500 driving exhibition around the outfield during that '49 baseball game described by roommate Dick Barlow, but Dean Neidlinger is still the only spectator Ed's absolutely sure was there!

Remember, it's Monday through Thursday, June 13-16 next June. As Lloyd and his '48 committee request, "Come back for more in '94!" It's not too late to enjoy The Place and your old friends.
