Winter 1943 saw most of us in the service. Those still in Hanover read the following headlines in the Daily D: "French Smash Nazis in North Africa—American Bombers Blast Japs in Solomons"; "Meat Shortage Forces Mac's to Close"; "Big Green Sextet Defeats Army for Ivy Title—Rondeau, Riley Star."

Congratulations "Val" Vallarino, appointed by President Bush to the joint U.S. Panama Committee to oversee the canal transfer in 1999.

It was good to hear from fraternity brother Seward "Mac" MacDonald, still practicing dentistry in Albany. Mac joined the marines with Bob Grant, serving with the Second Marine Division in the Pacific. He married Marlene, a Union grad and still a medical technologist, tookhis D.D.S. degree at Penn, and has practiced dentistry and oral surgery in Albany since 1958. Daughter Lynola and sons John (an architect) and Bill (a tennis pro who plays the circuit) all live in the East. Mac's brother Ken '50 is a second-home neighbor of ours here in Sunriver. They get together summers at the family place at North Hero, Vt., on Lake Champlain. Mac was a star "scatback" on the fraternity football team.

Larry Noble, having ejected his cat from his favorite swivel chair, writes from his Redding, Conn., office, which is officially offlimits to wife and five children. Surrounded by yellowing pages from Golf Digest, tips from Trevino and Watson, gardening books (he raises tomatoes, zucchini, beans, and herbs), and equipment from his 22-foot Aquasport, currenthy for sale, he contemplates preparing for winter and, more importantly, ending his letter to relax with a beer. He'll be at the 50th!

An update from Cal Osberg reports that he moved to Sandwich, N.H., in 1971. He and June are neighbors of Ken Sorlien, and Cal recently met Forbes Delany and VanVoorhees Lloyd on a Mediterranean cruise. Hampered somewhat by arthritis, he enjoys skiing, climbing, gardening, and seeing their children and grandchildren as much as possible. Cal expresses some displeasure with the "new personality" of "my old College." Hope you'll join us anyway in June.

Enjoying a semi-retirement, Dr. DougPerry works two days a week for the pediatrician to whom he sold his practice, spending his leisure time golfing, fishing, and gardening. He and Jane live just 20 feet from the Long Island Sound at Clinton, Conn. Doug stays in touch with roommate Bill Simonds, recently retired from medical practice in New Jersey. He also sees Harry Sayre's son Jim, a surgeon at Bristol Hospital, and Harry Kramer, who is married to Doug's wife's cousin.

Frank Perley lives with wife Peggy and three dogs on 50 wooded acres, including a trout pond/skating rink/swimming hole, croquet court, and vegetable garden at Black Mountain, N.C. When not involved in local church work, politics, or arts and crafts, he and Peggy swim laps to stay in shape and take courses at nearby colleges. They also sail off North Carolina. They hope to make our 50th.

We're sorry to report the deaths of HarryArmstrong, September 3; Bob Burnap, July 3; and Don Taylor, November 29.
