By now you have heard of the sudden passing of Class Secretary Binney Tower. As Eddie O'Brien reported, Binney suffered a fatal heart attack while on the Cape. Binney, along with Eddie and other class actives, played a prominent role in holding our class together. He will be missed and we are grateful for his contribution in performing the class notes chore and for his loyal support. Our collective sympathy goes to Shirley. We do hope that she may be able to join us at future activities.
In what must have been an act of pure desperation, Class Prexy Fred Stockwell asked if I'd be willing to replace Binney as class secretary. After several moments of conversation characterized by a level of smooth persuasion, intermingled with mild threats, that I have encountered only rarely, I agreed to attempt to fill Binney's shoes—at least until subjected to an expected early recall.
Please bear with me for a couple of issues as I have no copy to work with at this moment. Hence this writing will contain little news and considerable improvisation. Barbara and I plan to attend the fall mini which will be history when you read this and will give you a report in an upcoming issue. Meanwhile, I'd really appreciate your support by sending me news of you, your activities, class contacts, or whatever. I am apprehensive about taking on this job while living on the West Coast, which provides limited contact with most classmates. So please think about writing—we'd particularly like to hear from those who have remained all-too-long silent. My "Plan B " involves identifying Eddie O'Brien's closest neighbor and paying him a small stipend to steal Eddie's green cards and mail them to me. However, my wife wonders if it would embarrass the class to have its notes editor convicted of mail theft, so "Plan B" is a last resort.
Con and Miv Young, who have owned a second home here in Sunriver, visited recently. Con is retired from heading United of Omaha. He and Miv divide their time between Omaha, a condo on Marco Island, and an annual trip to Oregon. We floated the Deschutes River together and had dinner with Wayne Evans '44 and wife Eddie and Bruce Kenworthy '45 and Gino, all Sunriver residents. Barbara and I will be seeing Hex and Peg Harrigan in North Carolina and Bill and Betty Jones in Cleveland prior to attending the fall mini in Hanover. Hex is retired from the newspaper business but Bill is still hard at work.
Let me say that I share some of the concern that many have expressed about Dartmouth, but, on the whole I believe that most things are being done quite well. Academically, the college ranks in the top ten, was recently rated first in student satisfaction, and is one of only three colleges graduating 100 percent of its athletes. Our own 1991 Alumni Fund participation of 75 percent was outstanding, clearly indicating a high level of continued support by most, if not all, of us.
Don't forget to submit your biographies to Bob Gray with picture A.S.A.P. for the 50th Year Book. Hopefully, the next column will contain more class news.
