As reported in this space a couple of months ago, George Thompson was a candidate for state representative in Massachusetts's 9th District (Worcester). Like any good politician in search of publicity, George has responded promptlymid puts a veiy positive spin on what some would consider a negative outcome.
"Although I was not happy with losing, the race itself was a great experience for my wife, Kathy, and me, and it was satisfying to take a risk again as opposed to sitting behind a desk and cranking out billable hour after billable in the practice of law.
"We ran a door-to-door campaign, or a poor man's Clinton-Gore bus tour, which resulted in my wife and I knocking on hundreds, if not a few thousand, doors in the district. On election day my opponent, a 50-year-old town official from Grafton, and I split Northbridge; I beat her by 400 votes in my hometown of Westborough; she, however, beat me by 700 votes in her hometown of Grafton. Remarkably, we both eclipsed the previous write-in records in our hometowns. She dien went on to defeat her Republican and Independent opponents in all three towns on November 3.
"A significant reason for my showing was the generous financial contributions quickly sent to me by a number of dear friends from the class of '82.I am grateful that they again saved me from embarrassment! Moreover, whoever would have thought those 10-year-old photos from the Kappa Sig basement on Green Key Weekend would have value?"
Like any good attorney, George managed to fill two more pages with news of various classmates: "Rumor has it that Jon Edwards has left the practice of law in San Francisco and has started his own platform high-top sneaker business. The purported name of Jon's business is Lilliputian Inc., and its first line of sneakers is aptly named 'The Exaggerator.'
"Brett Homovec and Sieglinde Dalhm were wed in a postcard-perfect lakeside ceremony in suburban Detroit in August. They are now living in New Jersey, and Brett works as an investment banker in the Big Apple. In addition to Brett, and truly reflective of the diminishing breed of bachelors, John 'Tex'Strawn was married on Long Island on Labor Day weekend. Tex was the happy and blessed recipient of Allison Linneman '86's mercy, sympathy, and, perhaps, brief but significant departure from lucidity—she (1) married Tex, and (2) stood at the same altar with Tex and his two best men: Rand 'Socks for Calves'Stephens and Eric 'the Big E' Miller.
"On the baby front, Wendy and Eric Miller welcomed their second child, Eric Jr.,into their lives last summer. Eric Jr. has a two-year-old sister, Jessie. Eric Sr. is flush with pride that for the next four to six months he will be the most articulate male in the Miller household. I'm also informed that Mary and Jeff ßechler,Cindy and John Funk, Drs. Terri and BillKinnard, Jennifer and Steve Stone, and Jennifer and VJ. Dowling have recently started or added to their families. I am also told that Mr. and Mrs. Tom 'Theta DeltForever' Lane have just had their first child (boy). Finally, Cece Hauge Donoghue and Mike Donoghue are expecting bambino number two in March. Number one, Mike Jr., is already taller, tougher, and definitely has more hair than his junk-bond jockey dad."
What more can I say? Thanks for doing my job, George, but don't burn all your blackmail on one election. I see a big-time office down the road.
