Under the auspices of Mini-Reunion Chairman John Gillespie, 27 classmates I gathered at Harbour Ridge in Stuart, Fla., for a long weekend of conviviality. My thanks to John Heston for his timely fax, which is the basis of this report. "Here are my somewhat sketchy recollections of who and what transpired at our recent '54 class mini. It is a very attractive spot, tastefully done with the natural Florida environment and the St. Lucie River foremost in the designer's mind. Two lovely 'challenging' golf courses, plenty of tennis courts, club, and neighborhood swimming pools, etc. Attractive houses and condominium groups sprinkled around with lots of landscaping and green space in between. But the most endearing features of all are the three lovely homes of Bob and Fay Berry,John and Jinny Pope, and Charlie andFrannie Morrison. On successive evenings the couples hosted elegant cocktail parties; it was a three-way tie for gracious hospitality.
"Jim and Joan Adams flew in from Costa Rica looking tanned and very relaxed. Pete and Gail Barker, Jerry and Peggy Barton, Jerry and Dorothy Goldstein, Dave and Rosemary Mandelbaum, Dick and Jane Pearl, Dick and Jane Page, and Tom and Pat Sayles all flew down from greater New York. From the North Country came John and Sandy Gillespie, John and Betty Heston, Herb and Ann Hillman, and Dick and Audrey Lewis. Others from afar included Bob and Kit Dean, George and Betty Mc Laughlin, Tom and Char Clarke, Don and Beth Brief, and Steve and Carol Mullins.
"Then there was the Florida crowd. And what fun it was to see some of those tan-faced, white-haired classmates again and hear their stories of life among the alligators: Walt andWendy Dingwall, Bill and Dot Garland,Dick and Tootsie Gates, Herb and KateGildan, Dick Grassey, Pete and LynnSchenck, and Irv and Lee Sherwood.
"Activities included some golf here, a little tennis there, boat trips along the St. Lucie to the ocean, a swim, a sandwich, a chance to chat with a classmate you hadn't seen in years. We enjoyed superb dinners 011 Friday and Saturday evenings and a joint breakfast session on Saturday morning in the superb Harbour Ridge clubhouse, courtesy of John Dodge '53, who designed and developed the community."
To complete the report, I called Charlie Morrison to find out just what did happen on the golf course. Faye Berry's foursome, including Peggy Barton, Beth Brief, and Lee Sherwood, won low net, while Frannie Morrison and Tom Sayles won "closest to the pin." Heston reported that Bill Garland was the only one to hit into an armadillo trap. Herb Hillman won the tennis tournament, but then he has his own court up in Stowe.
I'm out of room, so those faithful correspondents who have written in the last month or so will have to wait until next month to get their 15 seconds of fame.
