So there I was late with this column and in hot water with the Alumni Mag. In the 11th hour I took to calling every person I know on the day that the East Coast was digging out of the worst blizzard in recent memory. Meaning that everyone was either stuck in traffic or excavating their car from a snowdrift. Valiantly, however, I did not give up. Fingers bleeding, on the verge of collapse, I finally reached a few news-heavy sources ...
First, a slew of Boston-based engagements, for some reason. Looking for a trip east this spring or summer? Pull out your calendars and phone books and get busy inviting your- self to the following:
Joanna Tsiantas reports her engagement to non-D Eddie Connor, a co-worker of hers who is, to quote Ms. Tsiantas, "very athletic." A Labor Day wedding in Newburyport is planned.
Mimi Reilly and George Eldridge announced their engagement last Thanksgiving and preparations are in full swing for the July wedding on the Cape. Apparently George has been preoccupied with registering the couple and finding the right china pattern. Don't sweat it, George. If your guests are anything like the norm, you'll only get a couple of forks and teacups in your pattern. Everyone else opts for the more "impressive" stuff like pitchers and large, unreturnable crystal things.
Henrietta Hung and Paul Perry, whose engagement was reported in these pages a few months ago, are now planning a June wedding. (My source wasn't sure of the date, so drop me a note, Henri.)
Also jumping on the marriage bandwagon is Chris Jacobs, who is planning a May wedding. (Sorry, Chris, but I could only get sketchy detes on your fiancee's name, like it starts with an "S.") Chris has asked fellow '85s Steve Hartmann, Jeff Healy, and GeoffRand to stand up with him. Steve Hartmann is currently working as a lawyer for the Justice Department in D.C. and traveling to Puerto Rico, New Orleans, Dallas, and San Antonio. Tough life, Steve.
Steve was also seen at a dinner or highpower Washington types (whose "inside-the- Beltway" statures a West-Coaster like me can only barely comprehend) which was organized by Steve Mines, who is currently finishing a stint at the University of Texas law school. Among those in attendance were Drew Quinn (back in D.C. and still working with the State Department), Sarah Millham (working environmentally in D.C. after getting a graduate degree in forestry at Yale), and Tom Aaberg (getting his graduate degree in education after teaching in the Stratton ski school for a number of years ... or so my source thinks. If this isn't you, Tom, my apologies.).
Update: During a weekend last August that was filled with so many activities some are calling it "Club Wed weekend" (not my pun, I swear), Sue Finnegan married non-D Mark Vassu at the Aquinas House on the Hanover Plain. Sue has wisely chosen to keep her own last name (lest she become beleaguered with the fatefully catchy "Sue Vaassu").
Finally, in closing, I am sorry to announce the passing of Stacey Ann Hardwick. At Dartmouth Stacey was a cheerleader, active in the Gospel Choir, and a founding member of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority. After graduating, she worked as an account systems engineer in the Marketing and Services Division at IBM. Stacey died of colon cancer on January IS in Kansas City, Mo.
