"What kind of education is it, like at Harvard, where you have 800 people in a class?. . .Teaching is when you have one person, a teacher in a room, doing improv with a class ... And all faculty should be made to teach freshmen."—Camille Paglia,The M.I.T. Lecture "Crisis in the AmericanUniversities"
Well, here is someone you have not heard from in a while: Howie Hayes! Howie is married to Julie, and both work for McKinsey & Co. in Chicago. They were married last May. Also originally from the Chicago area is Kristin Thompson, who has also gotten married. Kristin now lives with her husband in Boston. And boy are hearts breaking all over the world tonight: Andy Head, Rob Carey, and Geoff Michel have all gotten married recently—no, not in the same ceremony!
How about this month's "Brush with Fame?" A little bird has sent me an article from a Sun Valley newspaper. It's on restaurants in the area and features Cam Johnson's, tie has transformed the infamous Muleshoe into a bar and eatery offering munchies like chicken wings and stuffed potatoes until midnight. "As far as I know," Cam was quoted, "there's no place else that serves food until then." Cam is a former Salt Water Grill bartender and says that the makeover of the Muleshoe was extensive. "I've been pretty much living here." Cam's restaurant is called the Red Elephant Saloon; visit it if you are ever on Main Street in Hailey. "I'm pleasantly surprised with the way it turned out," noted Cam, "and I think other people will be too."
This just in—word for word: "Hello, Liz. My name is Huck Finn. I was in the class of '86. Now I float on a magic raft which takes me in search of waves, mermaids, and the simple tropical life. Last year it stopped in Costa Rica. I found plenty of all. Now I'm in Ecuador. We've had good waves for a month, but now a lull. So we begin our chants and prayers to the surf gods. I saw a mermaid yesterday down by the jetty. She swam away, for me never to see her again. My favorite juice is made from tamrindos. If we see each other, it would have to be in Cornwall. Are there palm trees? I hope all is well, and I and my magic raft send our best for the new year. Huck"
Well, Huck, hate to tell you, there are no palm trees in Cornwall, and there sure aren't the serious party treats of which you seem to be partaking!
Don't forget to begin considering your 1992-93 Alumni Fund gift soon. JenniferCulliton Paul will be happy to accept any amount you can muster this year. She writes that she finds fundraising for Columbia Law much easier than being head agent for our class. A feeling that we can all help to change. Her husband, Jon Paul, is still with Morgan Stanley in New York, although he has been spending a lot of time in the Los Angeles office recently. Some of you may have seen him at the Super Bowl in Pasadena—his reward for working so hard at the office. Jen writes that her reward was "less dry cleaning to drop off." True marital bliss.
And a quickie here: Dina Bloom is pregnant—congratulations! Fifty-cent stamp! (From the U.S., that is.)
