I was in Hanover for my first Winter Carnival since 1934. Fortunately some fresh snow provided background for the sculpture of Dr. Seuss's Grinch. No fraternity or dormitory sculptures this year, but I saw a winning basketball game against Yale, a beautifully skated women's hockey game against Princeton, and slalom races out on the Dartmouth Skiway.

As you watched the 1992 Winter Olympics, I'm sure you were reminded of our Jack Shea, gold medalist in the 1932 Olympics. He is still in the skating news: he was made honorary chairman to select the first-ever "short-track speed skating" team, based on competition at Lake Placid in December.

On a winter hike with a Kendal group on nearby Reservoir Road, after passing the Hanover Water Works, I saw a beautiful bronze plaque mounted on a big stone base and featuring a bas-relief of Edward S.Brown. It was presented on his 75th birthday and lauded him for his long service to the town of Hanover as health officer, selectman, and zoning-board chairman, and to Dartmouth College as professor of civil engineering (1937-77) and as treasurer of his class—1934!

The Ed Klees are quite happy with their move to Waterford at Rossmoor in Walnut Creek, Calif., where they have good community facilities and the independence they need, even a wine cellar. The Bob Davises also reported being pleased with their retirement choice at Lady Lake, Fla., where they stay active with golf and bridge—Bob was recently recognized in a jigsaw-puzzle history book.

I had a surprise update on Martin Johnson, who called my neighbor to tell about a grandson applying to Dartmouth. Marty is still operating a consumer finance company, and his home base switches between Reno and Napa Valley.

While all has been going well for me, the New Year began with a sad phone call. JoyDwyer, widow of Marty, our first class secretary, had a sudden fatal heart attack. Joy had been an upbeat member of our '34 family, and the Dwyers were close to me while we raised our families in Pleasantville.

With 1992 here, those '34s who graduated in 1937 from Harvard Law, Business, Med, and Engineering schools will soon be gathering for their 55th reunions. Let us know how it goes and who you see there.
