Freshman year began in September 1952. We were the first class to undergo "non-coercive orientation," which meant no more midnight rides into the country with those mean Vigilantes. White crew hats replaced the old pea-green beanies, and our class of 740 was one of the largest ever admitted. The D came out for Adlai, but Ike won in a landslide. Beagle captained freshman football (3-1), Faulkner headed soccer (4—0), and Marshall was captain of crosscountry (1-2). Pogo/Skigo was the Carnival statue as the college attempted to control the hordes of out-of-towners who annually trashed the place. (Unfortunately, that prevented Tom Rosenwald's date from getting into town.) The freshman basketball squad was Wolfe, Erwin, Julian, Nelson, Strauss,Chapman, Minelli, Burke, Pfeifle, Johnstone, Weymouth, Barnett, and Bradfield. Anyone who sends me their record and the coach's name gets a pair of high-quality reunion socks. More socks to the first person who tells me what French, Pumphrey, Liebman, and Faulkner have in common. And the last pair of those outstanding socks to the first response to the question, "Who was Junie Dunham, and what did she have to do with our freshman year?"
