AH, FRESHMAN SUMMER, A TIME TO relax after the rigors of a year filled with change. A time to reflect on challenges met. A time for research.

Research? Freshmen? Fourteen students from the class of 1996 spent their freshman summer as participants in the College's FirstYear Summer Research Project. Funded by the Hewlett Foundation, the two-year-old project provides faculty support as well as stipends of up to $1,OOO to students with, as former Dean of Freshmen Diana Beaudoin put it, "emerging or clearly identified research interests." This summer's interests ranged from Drew Ackert's research on the Microsoft Corporation to Meredith Martin's study of urban decay, from Tara Callahan's analysis of how advertising induced women to leave jobs after World War II to Christian Linton's investigation of protein metabolism in mice.

This fall and on into winter term all 14 researchers will be delivering presentations on—you guessed it—what they did on their freshman summer vacation.
