Barry Machado, that's Professor of History Barry Machado, is starting his 24th year at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Va. Barry teaches American history, with emphasis on American foreign policy and with, I would guess, a little sports history thrown in. A stellar third baseman just a few years ago in Hanover, Barry has moved gracefully to the sidelines. He coached the women's basketball team at W&L for two years during its start-up period. He also flashes signs to an American Legion baseball squad in Lake Geneva, Wise., each summer.

Barry and Anice, a middle school teacher, celebrated their 24th anniversary in August. Ethan, 21, is in his senior year at Beloit College in Wisconsin. He's captain and first-baseman on the baseball team. Amanda just started freshman year at Rhodes College in Memphis, Tenn. No, she doesn't play hardball. Roundball, yes. And runs track, too.

Barry spent a couple of days recently with our old teammate Pete Barber, who had headed east from Santa Rosa, Calif., to look at colleges with his son, Chris, a high-school junior. Pete and Barry were roommates at Phi Delt, and there were plenty of stories about those colorful spring baseball trips with Coach Tony Lupien and the gang. Pete, remember the night you slept in the bathtub?

Dr. Stephen Abram, a professor of anesthesiology at the Medical College of Wisconsin, has spent his professional life fighting pain. He is the former director of the John L. Doyne Hospital's Pain Management Center, and his work, beyond putting patients to sleep for surgery, includes helping patients cope with post-operative pain and chronic pain from cancer and injuries. A graduate of the Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, Steve completed his anesthesiology residency in Hanover and served two years in the navy before joining the Medical College in 1975.

Rear Admiral William B. Hayden, chief of Naval Air Training and former commanding officer of the U.S.S. hvojima and U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln, creates a stir wherever he goes. When Bill visited the Naval Air Station in Meridian, Miss., he was the subject of a front-page article and was feted at a reception hosted by the president of Mississippi State University. Nice photo, too.
