Shaking hands with President Bill Clinton recently was for me the thrill of a lifetime. But it pales in comparison with Dick Friedman's experiences. You remember Dick. He majored in existentialism, coached the Harvard ski team to a 1969 NCAA championship, and started a realestate business in Boston. Well, Dick's business grew dramatically, as has his sphere of contacts. In fact, last August when President Clinton vacationed at Martha's Vineyard, he and his family resided at the 50-acre Oyster Pond estate of—you guessed it—Dick Friedman. A Clinton fundraiser in 1992, Dick reportedly ran into Bill and Hillary in the summer of' 93 when the presidential couple stayed at the estate of Robert McNamara near Dick's estate. Dick is a high-profile Boston developer of Hyatt Hotels, retail shopping malls, 175 Federal St., Charles Square, and Harborlights Pavilion. He's also involved with Gap stores in several ventures. Friends include Barbara Streisand, Cheryl Tiegs, Gregory Peck, Paula Zahn, and writer David Mamet, who's cast him as an academic in a film just out, Oleamia. Dick's son Alex attends Columbia.
