The first edition of 1994. As resolutions get made and broken I am going to attempt to keep my first resolution: to write a totally disjointed column that catches up on all the information I've been sent by the alumni office or fellow classmates. So here goes.

Let's start with new additions to the Dartmouth family—otherwise known as... babies! Heidi Hibben Russell and husband Dan welcomed Henry into the world on July 12. Some time in August Holly Bass and fellow Microsoft employee (and husband) Bill Brader sent a message out over the Internet saying, "It's a boy!!! Tyler caught us a little by surprise, but we're all happy and healthy." Holly and Bill have both taken parental leave, which has to be the right way to do this whole baby thing.

Curt Ollayos and Christine Hellaker '86 announced the arrival of their third son, Macklin Campbell Ollayos, on August 30. Curt also writes that they've moved to Orlando. (Curt, Florida is my home state. I'd love to hear how it feels living there as a grown-up. Please let us know.)

Also by e-mail I learned that Patrick Shukson Foster was bom to JeffFoster and Debra Jaqua on October 22. Jeff writes, "Contrary to popular opinion, chubber babies are not born wearing council jackets!" I don't know what that means, but I'm sure someone does, so I'll include it. Jeff is a visiting professor at Hamilton College now.

Last but certainly not least, Barbara McElwaine, Ed Galligan, and son Conor were joined by Aidan Farrell.

Now if I had mentioned Jeff's work at Hamilton last I could have segued right into career news in education... which I'll do anyway. Arthur Abelmann joined the math and science faculty and has been named director of the computer center at Tilton School in Tilton, N.H. Cory Reed, who is an assistant professor in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of Texas at Austin, just published a book, The Novelist asPlaywright: Cetvantes and the Entremes Nuevo. Congratulations, Cory!

On to the legal profession. ElisabethSmith was nominated to the board of governors of the Long Beach Bar Association. Peter Charbonnier has become an associate with the law firm of Waller, Smith, and Palmer, P.C. Counselors at Law in Old Lyme, Conn. Mark Devorsetz finished the New York University Stern School of Business Executive Program.

Not to miss out on my diversity points here ... in the field of medicine, Dr. David Wood has joined the Cape Cod Hospital Department of Otolaryngology and the clinical practice of Hyannis Ear, Nose, and Throat Associates. Debra Duke Mosier has been called to serve as pastor to the Ecu Ministries of Olney. JoeFortier and his wife, Shelly, have moved from San Francisco to Hopkinton, Mass. Joe is developing and marketing new products for a financial services company.

The one person I actually spoke to was Revell Horsey. Revell is in Baltimore now. He left First Boston and joined a company he had already started with his eldest brother. The business incorporated in January 1991, and in April 1993 he joined them. The company has created an expert system that performs statistical analysis of ground-water quality data. Their mission is to develop advanced technology that addresses compliance issues. Revell's wife, Carrie Strobell Horsey, is getting her Ph.D. at Johns Hopkins. On top of all that, they have an 11-month-old and are fixing up the house they bought.

Leigh Miller Garry called to tell me that Kyle Gore was given an award from the Alumni Fund for ten years of service to our class. Congratulations and thanks to Kyle. Also, the first annual Chili Bowl happened. Thanks to Peter Montgomery for organizing. Leigh wants those of you in New England and New York to feel sufficiently guilty for not joining the festivities. And last but far from least, Leigh suggested I introduce a discussion topic that people could write to me about, and I'll compile the class's thoughts. The first topic: given the number of newborns cited above, how are people managing career and family?

Here's hoping you fulfill your New Year's resolutions.
