The highlight of 1953's litany of winter events has been John and Lorie Dodge's annual Dartmouth Golf Jamboree at Harbour Ridge on January 31. The class had its usual large turnout which included John and Lorie, Jim and Shirley Cobb, Bob and Anne Simpson, Bob Callender, Dick Fleming, Gib andToni Warren, Howie and Connie Clery,Robbie and Wilma Robinson, Nick andRhea Hagoort, Phil and Nancy Beekxnan,Bill and Jean Vitalis, Jack Jacobus, and your faithful scribe.

This year the Jamboree featured four receptions: the traditional before the match, the awards ceremony immediately following (at which 1953 distinguished itself by its magnanimity in not accepting one single award), a special reception for the class hosted by John and Lorie at their lively home on the St. Lucie River, and, finally, the reception of buckets of rain at precisely shot-gun tee time. Intrepid to the end, the contestants finished, either at the 18th or 19th, or at Chez Clery watching the rest of us Mighty Ducks wallow in.

As you read this column, the final winter event, and the main one, will be in progress at Crested Butte. At last report, Bill and JanieGilges had an entourage of some 53 '53s arriving for a week in the sun and snow. How many of us will really try to negotiate "Oh Be Joyful?" The Nordic Inn is booked solid with '53s—it most certainly will be quite "joyful."

With joy also comes sorrow. We are saddened deeply by the news of Steve Foster's and Chuck Stone's passing. We ask for your prayers for them, and for their families. Stoney joined us at the 40th and, fortunately, many had some time with him. I spoke with Steve during the past year. It is so important just to reach out and stay in touch as so many of us do; let's keep that as part of our wonderful legacy. And, let's raise our glasses high for Stoney and Steve.

Dr. Al Hathcock is the scribe for the Medical School's magazine and provided some breezy news about the medics of' 53. In super brief, Fred Aroick is at the Manchester VA Hospital. Tom Clark is preparing to retire this year after practicing for 35 years. EvHaggett and Bruce Gilmore were at the 40th, neither showing any indication of plans to retire. Bill Loomis is a psychiatrist in Orange County, Calif. Ross McIntyre is still very much involved in cancer treatment and research. Dave Stiff has been retired for more than three years, thoroughly enjoying it. And John Wortley continues in his family practice. By the way, we saw Walt and Sandy Shim in Hawaii in April, as well as Ed Quinlan. Thanks, Al, for letting me share the M.D. news with the rest of us mere mortals.

Finally, for the 1953 Research Award of the Year, Dick Hall forwarded a copy of the Alumni Magazine, dated November 1949, with lots of grand things about John Sloan Dickey, the many sons of Dartmouth in our class (99), and the fabulous Moosilauke trip. However, and this is a memory test, embedded in that article was a picture of the 'S3 bonfire prior to torching, about 35 feet in height, every conceivable flammable material stacked upon it, and, in grand style, a wooden keg topping it off. The caption reads, "A KING SIZE BONFIRE for Dartmouth Night won 1953 the plaudits of the the whole campus. It was a scientific masterpiece with drafts and everything." What a Class!
