53 Jack Patten sends great news of the award by the National Organization on Disability to McGraw Hill for exemplary efforts in the employment of our dis- abled brothers and sisters. Jack is president of the Business Week arm of McGraw Hill. The award was particularly gratifying to Jack as it was presented by Al Reich '52, president of the National Organization on Disability, and Phil Beekman, chairman. Also attending the ceremony was a major supporter of the National Organization on Disability, FredWhittemore.
During a recent visit to Hawaii, your scribe had the pleasure of spending great times with Tom and Joanne Dixon at a '53 mini-reunion held at brother Richard's beautiful outlook in Hawaii-Kai, and then again chez Dixon in Kaniohe. We in the contiguous 48 are missing something, and I have already started the effort with our tireless mini-reunion chairman to see if we can get Hawaii added to the candidate list. Tom and Joanne showed daughter Linda and I around Oahu, where one can find a mountain top to see anything. And the quintessential marine introduced us to Hawaiian canoeing. Tom and Joanne were preparing to travel the route of the ancient mariners from Papete, Tahiti, during the 1995 reenactment of the Polynesian migration of about 600 A.D.—but on a luxury freighter fit for the prince and princesses of Hawaii. Their three-week voyage took place in April.
During the Harbour Ridge mini-reunion, Freddie Carleton and I discussed using this column as a class bulletin board in addition to reporting news that may come in. With DonGoss's award-winning newsletter coming out almost monthly, much of the news has often already been reported (and so well). We would like to use the column to announce things you think would be of interest not only to 1953 but the other classes we are so close to. My telephone number with voice mail (at Icon Associates) is (407) 862-8079, fax is (407) 862-6008, and e-mail is . You can even write to me at the address below. Serve it up anyway you like.
Tireless Phil Beekman seems to devote so much of his precious time to doing things for other people, like the National Organization for Disability. One of Phil's more recent challenges (like he needs any more challenges) is finding a new leader for the LPGA. You golfing fans know that the Ladies Professional Golf Association is right on the brink of expanding and becoming a direct competitor to the PGA; exciting times ahead. Phil tells me it is tough to find the right combination; call the man in Harbour Ridge with any ideas.
F. Scott Goss took some well-deserved time off from the winter, setting up in his place in Hilton Head and awaiting the annual return of the golfers to Heritage, including Dick andCindy O'Conner, Jim and Jackie Cartmell, Tom and Arlene Bloomer, and, of course, those now in residence who include Jack and Fran Huck, Davie and BuffieThomas, and Barry ("Smiley") and Ginger Schoder. If there are others of you there let the '53 Bulletin Board know. The H2 minireunion took place between 14 and 22 April.
