I This is summer term on campus, probably the greenest time one ever sees in Hanover. Time for making new plans which will carry through fall and winter terms. Convocation, football weekends, mini-reunions, class gatherings, all will come with time. We love the predictability of it all, yet the unpredictability of each part.
One thing we can predict is the restless movement of our classmates' lives; to new places, retirement, new work, new grandchildren. And new babies! Yes, new class babies. Is this 1954 or what?
Arnie Weber in Dallas, writes again. Father of twin boys Nick and Adam, now age three, he tells of Zachary born to him and Maureen on March 25, 1994. Needless to say, and per Arnie's letter, he's thrilled, proud, and thinking of starting in business anew because the twins, he says, will be class of 2012, and Zach class of 2016. If that works out, the projected cost of their education is $1 million. (And don't count on a million being any big deal then, Arnie.)
And the incredible part is yet to come. From his first marriage he is the father of twin daughters, Stacy and Dana, age 29. Will Zach and the twins be spoiled by their sisters, and will Arnie ever give their first spanking? Keep us tuned in, Arnie. I'm sure the class is in awe, and wishes you well, but I'm not sure how many are jealous.
At the other end of the scale, equally exciting to him, is news of Ralph DeFonce retiring from his own Isaacson's Main Street Store, in Winsted, Conn. Ralph joined the store in 1963, and in 1975 became the owner. Jan, and eventually daughter Kathy joined a team of 14 employees, some widr 20-30 years at the store. With no interested party to pass it on to, Ralph decided to shut the doors. Now it will be golf, travel, and portrait painting for Jan.
