The Dartmouth Film Society is founded.

The Drama Department wants Arthur Mayer to teach film. Humanities faculty deny the request, saying "the study of film, as a discipline, is hardly fitting since it is backed by no vast body of literature."
1964 (fall)
Vice president (and former MGM exec) Orton Hicks '21 personally brings Mayer to campus.
1965
Dartmouth hosts a seminal conference that brings together the nation's leading film scholars and critics. The New Yorker's Pauline Kael warns, "If you think the movies can't be killed, you underestimate the power of education."
1968
The Dartmouth Film Society presents a semester-long retrospective on the films of Bullwinkle J. Moose.
