Did you know we have an Elvis scholar among us? Dr. Vernon Chadwick, an English professor at the University of Mississippi, created and began teaching a college course on Elvis Presley, thought to be the first one in the country. He also codirected the first conference on Elvis in August, analyzing the King's life on- and off-stage.

Vernon says, "He galvanized and represented Southern culture as few individuals have been able to do. Studying Elvis is essential for understanding the modern Southern and American culture in general." After Dartmouth, Vernon earned a master's from Oxford and a doctorate in comparative literature from Yale.

Dave and Barbara Dunbar have adopted two mixed-race children: Evan 4 and Oliver 2. The Dunbars recently participated in a television program on trans-racial adoption filmed for the Japanese version of Good Morning America. Apparently this involved being chased down a highway by a Japanese film crew as the Dunbars were trying to leave town to take a family vacation.

Dave does freelance writing and editing. Barb is features editor at Travel & Leisure magazine. Dave published an article on Charlevois County, Quebec, in the July issue. He has also written for National Geographic Books, and recently worked on a screenplay called Jimmy Got A Wife with a Romanian cinematographer. (I politely refrained from asking Dave what this screenplay is all about). Dave told me he misses team sports, so he plays hockey at 11:30 p.m. in the midnight league at the Sky Rink in Manhattan, and also helps bring hockey to inner-city kids by volunteering in the Ice Hockey in Harlem program.
