Alumni Help Out in the Schools

An every-issue guide to staying in touch with Dartmouth

"I'll take you Whitewater river rafting if you don't miss another day of school till June." That's what Sandy McGinnes '64 promised Carlos, one of the inner-city school kids assigned to him as a volunteer in the Alumni in the Schools program. The promise worked—and Carlos went on to college.

That's just one anecdote from the tutoring and educational support program originally sparked by former secretary of the College Mike AlcGean '49. Alumni in the Schools began in 1990 at the Boston Latin Academy with help from then headmaster Robert Binswanger '52, who has since become chair of Dartmouth's education department. The program has grown rapidly and now has several hundred volunteers serving in a dozen cities across the country. In some cases whole schools have been "adopted," as the Chicago Alumni Club has done, while elsewhere one-on-one aid prevails. Depending on the individual volunteer's interests and talents, and the needs of the student, counseling might be as basic as providing help in filling out college applications, while in other situations longerterm mentoring is involved.

Recruits are needed. For more information about how you oryour local alumni club can join the program, call Alumni in theSchools vice chairman William Carpenter '5O at (708) 990-2550.

Meeting in early December, too late to make this column, the Alumni Council will continue its discussion of the body's role(s) as forum, facilitator, sounding board, decision-maker, ombudsman. Under the gavel of chairman Otho Kerr '79, Alumni Councillors will explore the structure most likely to serve the College's interests. We'll give you a recap next month.

Do you have the time and talent to help The Women's Resource Center build a studentalumnae network deformer signed to provide leadership models, mentoring, and opportunities for undergraduates, especially women? Then e-mail your name—and those of other alumnae and alumni who might be interested in participating—to . The Center is also inviting suggestions about the structure and role of the network, which, among other items, might sponsor a newsletter and an annual distinguished alumna award.

The network has been endowed with a $50,000 gift from Win Neuger '72 and his wife, Christie. Neuger, incidentally, is a member of Dartmouth's last allmale class..
