Joe Verdi is retired and living in Brentwood, Long Island. Spent 32 years with Equitable Bag Cos., giving diatupin 1985. His hobby? Golf, of course, and in keeping with my new refined manners, I shall not disclose his handicap. After talking to Joe, could I not call Ed Simon? I did and found Ed in Montgomery, Ala., where he's been the past 17 years. Ed's a broker in food and wood products. I probably got that wrong, but Ed's not about to come after me. He says snow shoveling's a thing of the past; found time to travel to Europe and Africa. How you '46ers do get around.

I got a call from. Harry Sarkisian, wanting to know the 50th dates. June 7-9, 1996, Harry. Harry's in Short Hills, N.J., and now works for Prudential Securities. He was with Bache & Co. for a number of years, including a tour of duty in Europe back in the sixties.

I then went cross-country a bit and spoke to Bob Stevenson. He's in a place called La Canada Flintridge. Never heard of it, but found out it's near Los Angeles. Bob's been out there for 35 years doing commercial real estate. Must be doing fine because he's also director of a bank in Glendale. He has a son at Princeton who's a star on the golf team. Bob sends regards to Bob Jones and RalphSmith, a couple of guys I told you about a while back.

I talked to Phil Stedfast too. Phil's been fully retired for a couple of years. He served as director of City Planning for Norfolk, Va., for 30 years, after doing the same sort of work for Chester County, Pa., and Columbia, S.C. An avid gardener, he also plays golf or at it, he says. He's looking forward to our 50th.

Warren Krter '42 was kind enough to advise me about our late classmate Aud Brindley, who was inducted as a charter member into the South Side H.S. (Rockville Centre, L.I.) athletic hall of fame. You will all remember Aud as our greatest basketball player. He captained the great Big Green team of and led them to the NCAA finals, losing a heartbreaker to Utah in overtime. He was named to the All-American Team.

I wish I had more space to write about the next classmate, Howard Samuel. He wrote to me and sent me his biography. He was with the Amalgamated Clothing Workers for years and also served as a deputy under the secretary of labor. He was president of the Industrial Union Department, and, as he says, retired from the labor movement in 1992. He was long active in Democratic politics and twice served as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention. He's not fully retired, being still active with the Council on Competiveness and the Economic Strategy Institute. That's only a partial list of his achievements.
