The recent trend of classmates dropping out of the business world to go to work on their own continues. "After a career of 23 years in the world of finance, I resigned my position as president and CEO of Constitution State Corporate Credit Union in mid-summer," said Art Johnson in a note to me during Dartmouth Night weekend. He explained that Constitution State is a $ 1.1 billion banker's bank for credit unions in the state of Connecticut. "Presently I am taking some time off before embarking on some new ventures."

Don Baker reported that he, too, had left the world of big business. "I am doing management consulting—the current buzzword is business transformation." After spending many months in Ottawa, Don is now living in Williamsburg, Va., "which I recommend to anyone looking for a college-town environment south of Hanover."

Judge Bob Fuller is retiring from the Connecticut bench after eight years. "I have decided to go back into the private practice of law, in the areas of land-use and property-law litigation," he said. As classmates will recall, Bob completed a landmark book on Connecticut land use law. "Last year I got divorced, and this caused me to rethink my priorities," he said.

After years in Washington, D.C., PeteBleyler has now settled in the Boston and Hanover areas. In addition to his Boston home, he bought a condo at Eastman, joining, he says, at least three other classmates, and allowing him to do "a lot of hiking, biking, canoeing, and attending Dartmouth football games." Pete is heading the Boston office of Wm. M. Mercer Inc., an employee-benefit and compensation consulting firm.

Others among the group who returned to Hanover for the 99th Dartmouth Night reported that they were still pursuing the same track they have been on for years. For instance, Dick Spencer recently completed 20 years at DEC, though five years ago he switched from semiconductor chip engineering to systems engineering. Dick was divorced three years ago and now has a new woman in his life: Nancy. "Both of my sons, Brad and Jeff, with their girlfriends, saw Dartmouth just edge Yale today."

Jim Baum is heavily involved in retailing—running his own stores and serving as chairman of the Illinois Retail Merchants Association and vice chairman of the National Retail Federation. Still, he says, "Carol and I love to travel, and at this point in our lives, we work so that we can travel." Last spring, that meant camping in the Sahara desert in Morocco.

More next month about the mini-reunion. Excitement was building at the mini-reunion for the New Orleans reunion this April—and many said they would be there. Next year's Dartmouth Night weekend is the big one the 100 th anniversary of Dartmouth Night. We'll also be recognized as the 35th Reunion class as we build to June 1996. Plan to be there.
