"If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant; if we did not sometimes I taste of adversity, prosperity would not be so welcome" Anne Bradstreet. And so, we are in the thick of winter, holding out until the days grow longer and warmer. Isn't there any easier way?
Kevin McDonnel is now CEO of one of my all-time favorite eating places, Skyline Chili Inc., located in Cincinnati, Ohio. Skyline was the Cincy version of the Tally House during medical school, and oft-visited after long late-night study sessions by myself, MikeDraznik (who always ordered a "Five-Way"), Brian Skale, Bill Chilcote, "Skinny" Russ Kelley '73, and Tom Gianis '73. Kevin, I hope you'll find your way to the '99 reunion, because I think Five-Ways for everyone would be a great treat. But for the rest of us, don't let Draz (a.k.a. "Chopper") have any.
Tom Lord is the 1994 New Hampshire lacrosse Coach of the Year after a successful season at Hanover High. Tom's dad Ned Lord '33 writes in from Livingston, Maine, that Tom also coached the New Hampshire All-Stars to a 12-8 win over the Vermont AllStars last year. As a new resident of Towson, Md., I can attest that it's better in the crease.
I called my old friend C.K Krombach in Brookfield, Wise., to find out how he and Deb and their four kids are. C.K. continues his active law practice in Cheeseland while Deb finishes her master's in education (now maybe he'll learn something, Deb). C.K. was unfortunately unable to attend the '94 reunion but assures me he will be at the 25th with his gang. He also reports that Harry Butler continues to thrive with his construction business in Minnesota and Wisconsin.
"Location, Location, Location, Baloney." So writes Whit "Weed" Wall in the Wall Street Journal (or was that the Wall's Real Estate Journal? Oh, well, it sort of rhymes). Whit says that one should "Understand that your realtor (Whit) has been dealing with these issues for a long, long, looong time, and he can help you through this difficult period!" So call Whit today or whenever you want good service and real results! After all, Whit is really known for results in the Richmond, Va., area (and other areas, too). Whit also expressed his extreme disappointment at the absence of Tim "Fagan" Fahey, Peter"Nino" DeNatale, and Mike "Wargasm"Wargo at the 20th.
For those of you who still have the November Dartmouth Alumni Mag sitting around, I highly recommend Pete Blodgett's poignant essay, "Lessons of a Legacy: A record of three generations in the College Grant." Peter documents three generations of Blodgetts (grandfather Put '24 and great uncle Pete '25, dad Put '53, and Pete and his brothers) and their love affair with the New Hampshire wilds. Pete is the town librarian for Thetford, Vt., and I fondly recall the quick lesson he gave me on books five years ago at the 15 th.
Which reminds me of the wonderful time I had with my old man, Don Casey '48, at his 45th just prior to the '74 bash. I've always felt an unspoken bond with my ever-faithful father and mentor, knowing that he and I walked the Hanover plan when we were the same age. Here's to you, dad.
