From out in West Newton, Mass., came a missive from Holly Gallivan. She's graduating from Tufts Medical School this May with both an M.D. and a master's in public health. Holly would like to match in an ear, nose, and throat/headand-neck surgery residency. Luckily for me, Holly lives with a whole house of Dartmouthy types, so she was able to send me news of their lives too.
For instance, there's Debbie Bryant. She works for the Educational Development Center Inc., where she designs math and science curricula, runs conferences, and applies the computing skills she picked up on the Hanover Plain whenever she can. Debbie was awarded a master's in education from Harvard last June.
Catherine Stackhouse is currently working in early childhood education but considering grad school. Jen Armstrong is finishing up at U-Mass Med and did her radiology rotations here in Boston. One of my sources tells me that Jen's at the top of her class and plans to do her residency in radiology.
Just a reminder: this is not the Journal of the American Medical Association, despite any suspicions you may have.
Katie Moynihan is now in her last year at Duke Med and plans to enter pediatrics. Leigh McCary will soon graduate from UTexas at Galveston; she plans to be an obgyn. Mary Es Anderson Beaver is about to graduate from U-Texas at Houston and also hopes to do the ear nose throat (with headand-neck surgery thrown in) thing too. Husband Rich is only one year behind her at the same place.
Karl Benedict graduated from Tufts Med and is working in internal medicine at Thomas Jefferson in Philadelphia. C.J.Kunnappilly is also doing internal medicine at U-Penn. Anuj Gupta graduated from Yale Med and is doing orthopedics at Tufts-New England Medical Center.
Our class's one and only Ted Carleton is now living out in San Francisco and writing a novel.
Amy Byron Young and husband Peter '87 are living in Burlington, Vt. Their son, Nathaniel, was born in April.
Variety reported that Steven Cosson and Christopher Hogan were both involved in a production in San Francisco called StupidKids in December. Steve directed the set, Chris directed lighting. Julie Kalish '91 directed sound.
World traveler Megan Ryan left her job at the Worldwatch Institute in December after three years to take advantage of a fourmonth fellowship she was awarded by the U.S. Asia Environmental Partnership. She's working with a group trying to prevent soil erosion and protect biodiversity in Sri Lanka's central hills. She hopes to make it back in time for our reunion. Who will travel farthest to get to Hanover this June? Will it be Megan? We'll all have to wait to find out.
Last I heard from Megan, she described the scene at her workplace as something akin to the Garden of Eden—orchids and flowers everywhere, with the sound of clicking tree frogs and running water. However, that was quickly followed by her account of having removed six leeches off her feet that very day. Yuck. Anyway, Megan came prepared: she brought along some solar panels to power her Powerbook.
Other environmentalists: Drew Jones recently completed a two-month fellowship in Thailand. Ginny Eckert was in Antarctica recently on a month-long research expedition sponsored by the National Science Foundation. She's finishing her Ph.D. in biology in Santa Barbara, Calif., with husband Matt Jones '89.
Hope all is well with you, and don't forget to write!
