When I first heard that our class was having a simultaneous 30th birthday party in various locations across the country, I thought it seemed like a pretty silly idea. But still I slogged in through the rain from Jersey to go to the New York edition of the event, and I'm glad I did. Thank you Ellie Mahoney Loughlin for dreaming up this idea, and thank you Jamie Heller and Steve Savage for hosting the New York affair at the Carnegie Hill Brewing Co. It was a riot.
I had a funny conversation at the party with Eric Stambler. Eric, who seems to have a prodigious long-term memory, remembered that we had met during a freshman year squash class—part of the hated phys-ed requirement. A fat lot of good that did us. The most vivid memory I have is of walking through the bracing Hanover cold to that drafty gym, goose bumps bumping, and nostril hairs crackling.
Also at the party was Andrew Erlichson, who had just completed his Ph.D. in electrical engineering at Stanford and now works on Wall Street for BlackRock Financial Management. He tried to downplay his academic achievement, saying it was just a matter of "persistence." Yeah, right.
Anita Hamilton reports that she's working at Time Inc. Unfortunately I could barely hear her in that loud bar, but I think she said she works for one of their online publications. On a related subject, JamieHeller is executive editor of the online newsletter www.theStreet.com, which is jampacked with sawy inside Wall Street tips. Others in attendance included Heidi Reich, who works parttime teaching people to read and wants to go into teaching fulltime, and Mike Ballard, who showed up in a well-tailored gray suit, fresh from a day at the Federal Reserve. And, since it was in New York, there were a few lawyers in the crowd. Peter Zinman works in litigation; Adrienne Bye is logging long hours in corporate law. Amy Vachris didn't make it in from New Jersey, but I'll cut her some slack. Blairstown is a hike from the city, plus she has her hands full with a new addition to the family. She and husband Dave are thrilled with daughter number two, named Taylor Evelyn. Others at the gathering included Rob Kyle, Cliff Bernstein, and LarryMiller. I didn't get a chance to catch up with them; maybe this notice will compel them to bring me up to date.
That's all for now. Send me more news.
